Boston Blue: The 12 Characters That *Have* to Cross Over From the OG Series

The Reagan family lives on! On February 18, Deadline reported that Blue Bloods was getting a spinoff, Boston Blue, centered around Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg). The show is expected to debut during the 2025-26 television season on CBS and follow Danny from New York to Boston as a member of the Boston Police Department. He will team up with Detected Lena Peters, who comes from a prominent law enforcement family — and as the eldest daughter, you don’t mess with her!

Since this spinoff will be part of the Blue Bloods universe, it’s only natural that at least some of the former series’ characters will make a cameo. Here are the 12 characters we think should — at some point — head to Boston to see Danny.

There is no way Boston Blue writers can leave Danny’s blossoming romance with his partner Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) hanging, right? The dynamic duo just went on their first date in Blue Bloods‘ series finale, so it would be a bummer if their relationship were over before it really began.

With Frank Reagan putting politics behind him and focusing on his New York City Police Commissioner role, it seems obvious to have a storyline involving the two big East Coast cities. It’s the perfect opportunity to have those father-son moments with Frank giving Danny some heartfelt advice.

Now that Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) and her ex-husband, Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann) are giving their marriage another try, Blue Bloods didn’t offer a lot of explanation as to how it happened. Boston Blue could give this dangling storyline another shot and use their legal backgrounds as a reason for why they are in Boston.

 Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) often had a competitive relationship with his older brother on Blue Bloods. But the series finale baby announcement with his wife, Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray), means it’s time to put that aside. It’s family first!  Plus, Jamie and Eddie will want to show off their new bundle of joy which means a visit to Boston is in order!

Joe Hill (Will Hochman) was finally embraced by the Reagan family as they settled into the dinner table in the final Blue Bloods episode. After years of struggling to find his place in the Reagans, Danny and Joe had a major breakthrough in their relationship, and that uncle-nephew mentorship should continue. Joe is officially a Reagan!

Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa) had a love-hate relationship with Danny and we would love to see that dynamic continue. There’s no doubt that Anthony is a dedicated investigator and his skills could be useful to Danny if he worked on a big case that crossed over between Boston and New York.

In Season 13 and 14 of Blue Bloods, Danny’s former partner Jackie Curatola (Jennifer Esposito) reunited with him, and it turns out she got a promotion to chief of police. The onscreen chemistry between the former partners was always magical to watch, so perhaps Jackie could find her way to Boston just to help solve one more case or maybe mess with his blossoming romance with Maria.

Wherever Frank goes on the job, so does his trusted aide Abigail Baker (Abigail Hawk). If anyone could coordinate logistics in a potential NYPD and BPD case, it’s her.

As Frank’s right-hand man and the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, Garrett Moore (Gregory Jbara) could easily fit into a New York-Boston crossover.

Every cop show needs a psychic to help solve cases and Maggie Gibson (Callie Thorpe) always fills that need for Danny. She and Danny always had great chemistry, so we are predicting that he’s going to request her services for a case in Boston.
