Boston Blue Wastes The Perfect Opportunity To Bring Back Blue Bloods Vets

One of the most exciting aspects of Boston Blue is the possibility of Blue Bloods characters returning, but the spinoff has already fumbled its best opportunity to do just that. The upcoming CBS cop show follows Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he embarks on a new chapter in his life. Instead of solving cases in New York, he’ll be investigating crimes in Boston.

Following the Blue Bloods series finale in December 2024, CBS got to work trying to find a way to keep its universe alive. It was one of the network’s most successful TV series, after all. Months later, Boston Blue was born. Fans don’t have to be without the Blue Bloods franchise, but they will have to deal with the absences of many original characters.

Danny Will Already Be Settled In Beantown In The Boston Blue Pilot

The Spinoff Doesn’t Begin With Danny’s Move

If you thought that Boston Blue would kick off with Danny’s move from New York to Boston, you would be wrong. Instead, the premiere of the upcoming CBS police procedural TV series will begin with Wahlberg’s character already settled down in his new city. According to TV Insiderthe synopsis of the Blue Bloods spinoff’s pilot is as follows:

“NYPD detective Danny Reagan teams up with Boston detective Lena Silver to investigate a deadly fire at a tech company. As they dig deeper, they uncover a complex web of secrets involving facial recognition technology, family ties, and a search for justice that brings the Silver and Reagan families closer together.”

Boston Blue starts with Danny already settled in to his new home in Boston, ready to get back to work. It’s not confirmed, but the pilot’s synopsis makes it sound like the episode features Danny partnering up with Detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) for the first time. So, at least viewers will get to witness one beginning in the spinoff.

Aside from Wahlberg as Danny and Martin-Green as Lena, the pilot episode will also introduce the show’s other series regulars. The cast of Boston Blue includes Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, and Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan (replacing Andrew Terraciano, who portrayed Sean in Blue Bloods).

Boston Blue Skips Danny’s Farewells With Frank & The Reagans In New York

Tom Selleck’s Frank Won’t Appear To Send His Son Off

On the bright side, Boston Blue won’t have to venture too far into exposition territory in the pilot episode. Based on the hour’s synopsis, viewers will be thrown into the show’s central story right out of the gate. Yes, there will have to be setup, but it will mostly revolve around Danny’s new partnership with Lena, not the logistics behind his move to Boston.

On the downside, because Boston Blue opens with Danny already settled in, the CBS TV show’s premiere won’t feature Wahlberg’s character saying goodbye to his family back in New York. He would have already bid them farewell before jetting off on his new journey. As a result, the audience won’t get to see Tom Selleck and co. in the spinoff’s first episode.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for the Reagan family to make cameos in Boston Blue. It would have been an exciting treat for fans, but it would also make sense within the story’s context since Danny has to say goodbye to his dad, siblings, etc., before moving out of New York. Sadly, the Blue Bloods offshoot won’t take advantage of this opportunity.

At least the series will also feature Sean, Danny’s son, moving to Boston. So, Wahlberg’s Boston Blue character won’t be the only one who originated in Blue Bloods. The actor who plays Sean will be new, but he will still bring an air of familiarity to the show that will be missing due to the absence of his other family members.

Why The Reagans Still Need To Appear In Boston Blue

Bridget Moynahan’s Erin Is Already Confirmed To Appear In The Blue Bloods Spinoff

The good news is that one major Reagan family member will return in the Boston Blue premiere — Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan. However, her appearance cannot serve as the only cameo in the spinoff. The show must feature more special guest stars, preferably among the likes of Tom Selleck, Will Estes, Len Cariou, or even Marisa Ramirez.

Wahlberg’s name and Boston Blue‘s connection to Blue Bloods will undoubtedly lure viewers in. However, the upcoming series’ ratings will only rise if Wahlberg’s former co-stars reprise their roles in the spinoff. Boston Blue has Moynahan, but it needs more. If Erin can come to Boston (for unknown reasons), the others can, too. Boston isn’t that far from New York, after all.

The need for Blue Bloods cameos is even bigger because the offshoot revolves around family, just like the original show. Instead of the Reagans, though, it will focus on the Silvers. Danny will still be the protagonist, of course, but he left his own family behind in New York. Perhaps the Silvers will become like a second family to him.

Nevertheless, Danny’s family is important to him. Erin will be around to meet her brother’s new partner and her grandfather, stepmother, stepsister, and brother in the premiere. It stands to reason that Frank, Jamie, and the other Reagans should, as well. Only time will tell which Reagans show up to the party in Boston Blue, though.
