“Breaking Down the Ending of The Rookie Season 7, Episode 14”

The Rookie season 7, episode 14, “Mad About Murder,” features the same tense yet funny tone of the previous episode, “Three Billboards,” and gives some of the most beloved cast members some weighty storylines. Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) works on a project at the LAPD office and a character from Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey Nune’s (Jenna Dewan) coming back, and that’s not all that happens. There’s also the sad case that Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) work on, which further cements their strong bond.

While of course every episode of The Rookie spotlights Fillion’s 40-something rookie cop, and it’s great to see the popular actor whose past credits include Castle, Firefly, and a brief Deadpool & Wolverine role, some of the other characters are given the spotlight in the latest episode. So, what happens at the end of The Rookie season 7, episode 14?

What Happens At The End Of The Rookie Season 7, Episode 14, “Mad About Murder”?

At the end of The Rookie season 7, episode 14, “Mad About Murder,” Lucy and Celina visit the home of Greta, a woman they came across on social media who seems to help pregnant women. They get a bad vibe and wonder if Greta has taken the baby of Aria Griffin, a young woman who has gone missing after her family didn’t support her pregnancy. Then, Greta frantically packs as the baby and Aria are both at her home, proving she’s one of the episode’s villains. Greta has tied up Aria and plans to kill her, but thankfully, Celina and Lucy are there to stop it.

In a tense and well-acted scene, Celina walks through Greta’s house and Greta pushes her down the stairs. Lucy jumps through the window to save Celina, the baby, and Aria. Aria’s sister Taylor (Erica Cho) reunites with Aria at the hospital, and they start to repair their relationship. Like NCIS season 22 and all the previous seasons, The Rookie season 7 dives deep into a scary and compelling case each episode. This missing person case has been tough for Celina, whose sister Blanca was abducted by John Chambers, an LAPD officer, when Celina was young. Blanca tragically died, which has of course haunted Celina ever since. In a moment that proves her kindness and compassion, Lucy tells Celina:

“It’s okay if you’re not okay.”

The LAPD team tries to take down Malvado (Jimmy Gonzalez), a memorable villain on the police drama and the hitman hired by Bailey to go after her ex-husband Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), who was abusive. Malvado fights Bradford and Nolan before Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) shoots and kills Malvado, which ends this disturbing story arc.

Laura Stenson (Britt Robertson) chats with the LAPD officers back at the office and says that while the dark web hitman website is still online, people who are trying to hire them have to talk to federal agents instead. The team then gets ready to play LAPD flag football, which is a happier moment in an otherwise dark and tense episode of the TV drama about police officers. Bailey is relieved to learn about Malvado’s death because he was scared he would come after her and Nolan.

Finally, The Rookie season 7, episode 14 ends with Miles telling his team about his ideas for updated training videos and says he wants Bradford to star in them. Celina also tells true crime podcast host Heather Marie (Amanda McCants) she won’t be involved with the episode she’s recording about Blanca. The episode concludes with a sweet exchange between Nolan and Bailey after the football game as he tells her:

“In my eyes, you’re always a winner. Just not today.”

What Else Happens In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 14, “Mad About Murder?”
The Rookie season 7, episode 14, “Mad About Murder,” focuses on the two main storylines of the dark web hitman for hire website and a missing pregnant young woman. However, there’s a smaller plotline that is also important: Miles working on how to film new LAPD training videos that give helpful information.

In contrast to other procedurals like Chicago P.D. which are always fairly grim, The Rookie season 7 continues to showcase Nolan’s corny sense of humor. In one scene, he tells Bailey that he wakes up every day and asks, “What hurts?” Later, he makes an awkward joke about the assassins who are being hired on the dark web, and he says, “That’s how the cops do it on TV.” When The Rookie comes back for season 7, episode 15, “A Deadly Secret,” fans can likely look forward to more silly jokes from Nolan along with another intriguing case.
