Virgin River enthusiasts have expressed their disappointment over what they consider an “awful” wardrobe decision for Mel Monroe (portrayed by Alexandra Breckenridge) in the show’s fifth season. As fans eagerly anticipate the release of season six, many are calling for a significant makeover in Mel’s fashion choices, criticising the outfits from the last season as being too matronly.
A fan voiced their opinion on Reddit, stating: “Am I the only one hoping that she is dressed better in season 6? ” They added, “I am rewatching the odd episode of season 5 and I forgot how old lady like they dressed her.”
The character’s style may have been influenced by her storyline, as Mel stepped back from her role at the clinic due to her pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage, which also affected her relationship with Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
Despite the tragedy, viewers are hopeful for a more fashionable Mel in the upcoming season.
One fan took to Reddit this week with some strong words for the show’s producers.
“Am I the only one hoping that she is dressed better in season 6?” they wrote.
“I am rewatching the odd episode of season 5 and I forgot how old lady like they dressed her.”
Fans are keeping their fingers crossed she has better luck in season six, and perhaps some more opportunities to get her glad rags on.
“The long, billowy dress and outer cape she wore to the dinner at Brie’s was awful,” another viewer replied. “What were they thinking of?”
A second commented: “I’ve been saying this! What was all that frumpy stuff? Hoping for a different wardrobe team this time around.”
Taking a look back at previous instalments, another said: “I’m rewatching season one and two and she looked so good at the start!”
“Cute, casual outfits with great boots, little sleeveless jackets, autumnal colours. What the hell happened in those later seasons?”
And a final fan replied: “Easily my biggest pet peeve with the show.”
“The frumpy cardigans with the high neck shirts? I’m begging for her to have better style next season. It’s currently giving middle school teacher in their 50s.”
Season five was filled with drama, including a forest fire that could have been disastrous if not for Hope McCrea’s (Annette O’Toole) quick thinking.
Additionally, Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) attempted to reconcile with Jack after finally admitting he wasn’t the father of her twins, while Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins (Tim Matheson) battled with deteriorating eyesight.
Fans are hoping that the upcoming sixth season will provide more opportunities for Mel and Jack to dress up – including their impending wedding – and put an end to complaints about the Virgin River lead’s dowdy wardrobe.
