Bridgerton season 4 will tell Benedict and Sophie’s love story

Welcome to the marriage mart, Mr. Bridgerton.

Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) has been unmasked as the next romantic lead of Bridgerton. Season 4 of the hit Regency-era drama will follow the free-spirited, second-eldest Bridgerton brother, who is “loath to settle down” despite oldest brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and recently-betrothed younger brother Colin (Luke Newton) both being happily married.

Of course, that all changes when he meets “a captivating Lady in Silver at his mother’s masquerade ball,” per Netflix’s synopsis.

The season will be adapted from Bridgerton author Julia Quinn’s Benedict-focused book, An Offer from a Gentleman, a Cinderella-inspired tale that sees Benedict meet Sophie Beckett — the illegitimate child of an earl who has been relegated to servant to her stepmother — at a masquerade ball hosted by his mother, Lady Violet (Ruth Gemmell).

The eight-episode season 4 succeeds the record-breaking season 3, which saw Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton fall in love and get married despite the former’s secret identity as Lady Whistledown. The third season recorded the show’s biggest opening weekend ever, recently joining the list of Netflix’s most popular titles of all time.

It’s now Benedict’s time to shine after three seasons of growing up. “It felt important for him to explore the fullness of himself before he settles down,” showrunner Jess Brownell told Tudum. “He is someone who has big appetites, and we wanted to see him living a big life before he goes into settle-down mode.”

“There are a lot of things I want to say about it,” Brownell added of season 4, which will once again be a two-year wait, “but I should probably wait…”
