Bridgerton Season 4 Will Test Lady Whistledown Like Never Before, Teases Showrunner md18

Penelope Bridgerton (née Featherington) will face new challenges as Lady Whistledown, the Ton’s foremost gossip columnist, in Bridgerton season 4. While Bridgerton season 3 focused on Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) friends-to-lovers romance, the unraveling of Penelope’s alter ego played a major role in her character’s development and long-awaited love story.

In an interview with TVLine, Brownell shared that Bridgerton season 4 is a “big season for Penelope, because she finally came out as Lady Whistledown, so she’s having to navigate what it’s like being a gossip columnist when the people you’re writing about know you’re the one writing about them.”

Will overhearing juicy tidbits from the servants be enough to keep the Whistledown business afloat? Or will everyone be on high alert in her presence?

Thankfully, Penelope has an understanding husband in her corner, one who has learned to embrace her business-savvy mind and her considerable social power. “Colin is there to support her,” Brownell said of Newton’s role in season 4, “but it’s going to put pressure on each of them for sure.”

Continuing Lady Whistledown’s column in the show represents a markedly different approach from Julia Quinn’s original Bridgerton books. In the novels, Penelope and Colin’s love story takes place after Benedict and Sophie’s. Their story is the third, while Penelope and Colin’s book is the fourth installment. When it’s Eloise’s turn, Whistledown is no more, as Penelope chooses to end her gossip column after her unmasking.

It’s anyone’s guess how Penelope might approach her chosen career in Bridgerton season 4 and onward, especially now that she’s officially part of the Bridgerton family. Would never writing about them again put her in an unfavorable position with the Ton? Or will her continued role in society help Benedict and Sophie overcome their apparent class divide in the upcoming episodes? That remains to be seen.
