‘Bridgerton’ Season 5: 3 New Characters, Bold Romance & Everything We Know So Far md18

If you’re still reeling from Benedict Bridgerton’s big season, take a breath, because the Ton is already moving onto the next sibling.

Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton Season 5 is officially happening, and it’s finally time for the family’s quietest member to take centre stage. That’s right, Francesca Bridgerton is on her way.

We’ve rounded up all the details on who’s joining the cast, the major changes coming to the story, and when you can expect to see it on your screen. Here is everything we know about the upcoming season of our favourite Regency fever dream.

Who is in the cast of Bridgerton Season 5?

Hannah Dodd is back as Francesca Bridgerton, but she won’t be the only one in the spotlight. Masali Baduza is returning as Michaela Stirling, who was introduced at the end of season three.

While the usual mainstays like Ruth Gemmell, Luke Thompson, Yerin Ha, Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan are expected to pop up, there are a few new names to also keep an eye on.

We’ll meet Michaela’s mother, Helen Stirling, played by Jacqueline Boatswain. Gemma Knight Jones will also star as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, a close friend and confidante to Michaela who knows exactly how to navigate the London social scene.

And Tega Alexander is joining as Christopher Anderson, the son of Lord Anderson (Lady Danbury’s brother). He’s described as a bit of a charming Casanova who might be more insecure than he lets on.

Now, we’re not trying to throw too many spanners into the works here, but we are working on a slight theory: in the books, Hyacinth’s main love interest is the grandson of Lady Danbury. Could it be that the producers are working to introduce the nephew of Lady Danbury, instead? Perhaps not, but it’s fun to wonder about what wild things the Shondaland team will cook up next.

Either way, it’ll be nice to see some new faces in the mix.

What is the plot of Bridgerton Season 5?

The plot of Season 5 picks up about two years after Francesca loses her husband, John. Now a young widow, she decides to head back to London with the intention of finding a practical, sensible second marriage.

However, those plans get complicated when Michaela Stirling returns to help manage the family estate. Francesca starts to realise her feelings for Michaela are becoming a bit more intense than she expected, leading her to question whether she should stick to her pragmatic plan or follow her heart.

It’s a significant shift for the show, as it marks the series’ first central sapphic romance.

“It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means,” showrunner Jess Brownell told Tudum.

“But to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”

How will Bridgerton Season 5 differ from the book?

If you’ve read the original novel, When He Was Wicked, you’ll notice a pretty big departure.

In Julia Quinn’s version, Francesca eventually falls for John’s cousin, Michael Stirling, two years after his death.

The show is sticking to the core themes of the book — navigating grief and finding love with a close confidante — but they’ve swapped Michael for Michaela.

This gender swap changes the dynamic of the relationship and moves the show further away from the source material to focus on queer representation.

Since the show is moving away from the book’s original male love interest, it’s safe to assume the storyline regarding Francesca’s struggle with fertility and her desire for an heir will be handled differently or shift focus to fit the new dynamic between her and Michaela.

What is the release date for Bridgerton Season 5?

As much as we’d all love to binge it tomorrow, the production cycle for this show is pretty long. Netflix hasn’t given us a specific day yet, but based on how long these seasons usually take to film and edit, we are likely looking at an early 2027 release.

Until then, you’ve got plenty of time to catch up on the rest of the series.
