Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh speaks out on claims show ‘failed to light Black skin’ while on set

Bridgerton star Adjoah Andoh was transparent about the obstacles that she’s encountered during her career when she appeared on the Stirring It Up podcast

Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh seems fed up with how the famed Netflix series and other shows capture Black actors on-screen.

Earlier this month Adjoa, 61, most known for her role as Lady Danbury in the Regency Era-themed romantic drama, appeared on an episode of the podcast, Stirring It Up. While on the show, the actress talked about the obstacles she’s encountered during her time in the industry that have kept her from being able to feel fully comfortable within her profession.

“The continuing conversation about lighting Black skin on every show, nothing’s changed,” the Law & Order: UK alum said.

Adjoa explained that for an understanding of the importance of properly lighting different skin tones to be established and for it to get “better,” Black actors have to become more vocal.

“I want to stay in character,” she stated. “I just want to come on and be Lady Danbury and do what she’s got to do and be totally engaged with that.”

The Hollywood star divulged that there was a point in her career where she didn’t feel confident enough to address the issue.

“I will now go, ‘Am I blond?’ But I hate doing it because a bit of me is like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to do it. I don’t want to make a fuss,’” Adjoa added. “When people say we’re chippy or we’re being militant or we’re all that stuff, what I want to say is, ‘I’m just a human being and I just want to do the gift that I’m blessed with. I want to do it in a free way, like I see many other people doing.’”

Adjoa eventually wants the industry to evolve to a space where she no longer has to speculate if her skin color will affect whether or not she lands the gig.

“I don’t want to think about it. I just want to get the job because I’m great, or not get the job because I’m s- -t,” she admitted.

Bridgerton has had TV viewers fully invested in the series since it premiered on Netflix in 2020. A month after Season 3 wrapped, the streaming giant and production company Shondaland announced that there would be a fourth season on July 23. The fourth season of Bridgerton will turn its focus to the bohemian Benedict, the second of a family of eight siblings, portrayed by Luke Thompson.

The entire Bridgerton series is based on Julia Quinn’s book series. Netflix has been approached by the Mirror US for a comment.
