Donnie Wahlberg is no longer the only Blue Bloods actor set to appear on Boston Blue. The Danny Reagan actor recently confirmed the return of another Blue Bloods alum in a behind-the-scenes image from the set of the upcoming CBS spinoff.
In an Instagram post, Wahlberg shared a photo with his former Blue Bloods co-star Bridget Moynahan to announce that she would be reprising her role as Danny’s sister, Erin Reagan, in the series premiere of Boston Blue. “Reunited and if feels so good! So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister [Bridget Moynahan], join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue!” the post’s caption read. Wahlberg also revealed that Moynahan will “be bringing her incredible directing talents” to Boston Blue. “More fun (and surprises) to come. Let’s go!” the actor concluded.
Reunited and if feels so good!
Moynahan, who appeared in all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods as the New York County Assistant District Attorney, is the second alumnus from the hit CBS series confirmed to appear in Boston Blue, after Wahlberg. While Blue Bloods character, Sean Reagan, Danny’s youngest son, will also appear in the spinoff, the role has been recast with Mika Amonsen. Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean in Blue Bloods, was reportedly not brought back due to Boston Blue going in a “new creative direction” with the character. In Boston Blue, Danny will follow Sean to Boston after the latter moves there to start his career in law enforcement as a patrolman.
A New Chapter in the Blue Bloods Universe
Announced in February 2025, Boston Blue, like its predecessor Blue Bloods, will center around a multi-generational family with ties to law enforcement. Only the Reagans won’t be the focus this time around; instead, it will be the Silvers, led by patriarch Reverend Peters, portrayed by Ernie Hudson. Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan will cross paths with this family when he is partnered with Sonequa Martin-Green’s Lena Silver, Reverend Peters’ granddaughter and a “rising star” in the Boston Police Department. The rest of the main cast includes Maggie Lawson as Lena’s stepsister Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as her younger brother Jonah Silver, and Gloria Reuben as her mother Mae Silver.
Anthony Hemingway is directing the series premiere of Boston Blue. Wahlberg revealed back on July 8 that the cast had just finished their first table read for the spinoff, which, given that it’s over a week later, should mean that the series is now in production. Boston Blue is the first franchise expansion in the Blue Bloods franchise, although series creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis initially didn’t intend for it to be set in that universe. It was only after a script was ordered and well-received that CBS asked them to rework their pitch into what is now Boston Blue.
