In 2022, Justin Hartley launched Change Jar Productions, a company focused on creating emotionally intelligent, character-driven content for film and television. The move marked a pivotal moment in Hartley’s career—not just as a performer, but as a storyteller and industry leader.
“I’ve played a lot of great roles,” Hartley said. “Now I want to help shape the stories themselves.”
Inspired by a desire to see more meaningful narratives—particularly those involving complex family dynamics, social issues, and underrepresented voices—Change Jar Productions was born with a mission: tell stories that matter.
Balancing Art and Business
Running a production company is no small feat. Hartley juggles multiple roles: creative visionary, project manager, investor, and occasionally writer. But his years in front of the camera gave him a unique understanding of what works—and what doesn’t.
His first major project under Change Jar was Tracker, in which he also stars and executive produces. His involvement in development, casting, and writing decisions has shaped the show’s identity and tone.
Fostering New Talent
Hartley is particularly passionate about mentoring writers and directors who are early in their careers. He frequently holds table reads for independent scripts, offers feedback, and opens doors for talent from diverse backgrounds.
“I remember how hard it was to get someone to take a chance on me,” he said. “Now I want to be that person for someone else.”
His company has quietly begun acquiring scripts from lesser-known writers, and plans are underway for a slate of films that include social dramas, romantic comedies, and even a docuseries on fatherhood.
A Producer with Purpose
Unlike many celebrities who start production companies as vanity projects, Hartley is deeply involved in every layer of production. Colleagues have described him as hands-on, collaborative, and deeply respectful of every department—from makeup to post-production.
He’s also committed to sustainability in production, implementing eco-friendly policies and reducing waste on set.
