In a deeply emotional revelation, legendary comedian Carol Burnett shared the special gift she received from her dear friend, Lucille Ball, on the day the iconic comedian passed away. Burnett opened up about this poignant moment during the special The Carol Burnett Show: Mother of All Marathons, set to air on May 10.
Lucille Ball, a trailblazer in the entertainment world and the creator of I Love Lucy, had been a close friend and mentor to Carol Burnett throughout her career. Their friendship began in 1959 when Ball attended Burnett’s Broadway performance in Once Upon a Mattress. Ball later invited Burnett to appear on her TV show and had a long-standing tradition of sending her flowers every year on her birthday.
On April 26, 1989, when Burnett was celebrating her 56th birthday, she received a bouquet of flowers from Ball, along with a note that read, “Happy Birthday, kid.” Tragically, this was also the day that Lucille Ball passed away. This final gesture of friendship not only marked the depth of their bond but also symbolized the lasting connection between two of America’s most beloved entertainment legends.
Now 92 years old, Carol Burnett is currently starring in Palm Royale on Apple TV+ and has hinted that this may be her final major role unless another special opportunity arises.
