Anyone hoping that Ioan Gruffudd’s short-lived love interest Angus will return for Elsbeth season 3 will be glad to hear series star Carrie Preston’s thoughts on his role. While Elsbeth’s cast of characters was already relatively large by season 2 of the starry Good Wife spinoff, the show didn’t have a love interest for its title character. However, Ioan Gruffudd’s Scottish fire-fighter Angus changed that in season 2, episode 11, “Tiny Town.”
“Ioan, of course, is so great, and he was so game and so excited to be a part of the world… He put all of his efforts into making a wonderful and dynamic character, and it was such a great premise, too, that we had to meet through screens, and it was so Elsbeth that she would meet somebody through an art installation thousands of miles away, and it was in the Valentine’s Day episode. All of that is a perfect recipe for romantic comedy at its best, and so, we’re very glad that the audience loved it.”

The Elsbeth Star Complimented Ioan Gruffudd’s Performance
Showrunner Jonathan Tolins was more forthcoming about Angus’s possible return, telling ScreenRant “I would love to have him come back and visit New York again or take the show to Scotland.” That said, it is important to note that Elsbeth isn’t primarily about the title character’s love life, and Tolins wanted to keep it that way. Tolins said in the same interview that the show was not looking to pair off Elsbeth with a love interest permanently and that the show’s focus on her journey of self-reinvention could be compromised by such a plot.
This might explain why, although Preston loved the storyline and Gruffudd’s role in it, she didn’t mention the character’s potential return. Since Elsbeth’s season 2 ending sent Kaya on her way, the show arguably has more room for new characters in season 3. That said, a Scottish singer and firefighter is unlikely to become a permanent addition to the cast of the series. If Angus did return, it would most likely be in another romantic subplot, and that is not necessarily a bad thing, as it could give Elsbeth an excuse to cross the Atlantic.
Our Take On Ioan Gruffudd’s Potential Angus Return In Elsbeth Season 3
The Spinoff Could Benefit From Angus’s Comeback
Elsbeth and Angus have great chemistry in “Tiny Town,” and the episode works well as a bittersweet, self-contained love story. However, the pair’s continued communication means that a trip to Scotland would not be off the cards in season 3, and this could allow Elsbeth to reignite the romance between Ioan Gruffudd and Carrie Preston’s characters without the show totally reshaping its formula solely to facilitate this new character.
