Reasons for Cancellation
Although both series maintained a steady viewership, ratings declined over the past two seasons. FBI: Most Wanted averaged around 6.5 million viewers per episode, reflecting a 10% drop compared to the previous season. Similarly, FBI: International drew approximately 6.53 million viewers, also experiencing a 10% decrease.
Additionally, the high production costs played a significant role in CBS’s decision. FBI: International was filmed overseas in Europe, while FBI: Most Wanted shot scenes in multiple U.S. locations, leading to elevated expenses.
The Future of the FBI Franchise
Despite ending these two spinoffs, CBS will continue the original FBI series, which has been renewed for its 10th season and is scheduled to air in the fall. The network is also developing a new spinoff titled FBI: CIA, set to premiere in the 2025–2026 season. This upcoming series will focus on a joint task force of FBI and CIA agents working together on domestic counterterrorism operations in New York City.
The introduction of FBI: CIA will be teased in a crossover episode in the seventh season of FBI, setting the stage for the new show.
Fan Reactions
The cancellation of the two spinoffs sparked mixed reactions among fans. Many expressed disappointment and surprise on social media, with some considering the end of FBI: International a significant loss. Others felt that FBI: Most Wanted had declined in quality over time and saw the cancellation as an opportunity for the franchise to refocus.
