CBS Cancels Two FBI Spin-Offs, Orders New CIA Series

Los Angeles, CA — March 2025 — CBS has announced significant changes to its FBI franchise lineup, canceling two of its spin-off series while introducing a new show centered on the CIA. This strategic move marks a shift in the network’s programming focus as it looks to refresh its crime drama offerings.

Cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International

CBS has decided to end FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International after their current seasons. FBI: Most Wanted, which debuted in 2020, will conclude with its sixth season, while FBI: International, which premiered in 2021, will wrap up after its fourth season. Despite both series performing well in terms of viewership, the network cited financial considerations and the need to streamline its programming as reasons for the cancellations. CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach noted that the projects no longer made economic sense, prompting their discontinuation.

Introduction of CIA Spin-Off

In place of the canceled spin-offs, CBS is introducing a new series titled CIA, which is set to debut in the 2025-2026 season. The show stars Tom Ellis, known for his role in Lucifer, as Hart Hoxton, a charismatic and rule-breaking CIA case officer. He will be paired with a yet-to-be-cast FBI agent who strictly adheres to the rules. Together, they will operate from the CIA’s New York Station to investigate domestic threats. The series was initially conceived as a spin-off titled FBI: CIA but has been rebranded as a standalone show. David Hudgins, who previously worked on FBI: Most Wanted, will serve as the showrunner and executive producer.

Programming Changes

As part of the network’s programming overhaul, CBS is moving the original FBI series to Mondays for the 2025-2026 season. CIA will also air on Mondays, creating a new night of crime dramas for viewers. Unlike the interconnected format seen in NBC’s One Chicago franchise, CIA will operate independently within the FBI universe, with no strong narrative ties or crossover appearances planned. This approach aims to attract both existing fans and newcomers to the series.

Future of the FBI Franchise

Despite the cancellations, CBS remains committed to the FBI franchise. The original FBI series has been renewed through its ninth season, ensuring its continued presence on the network. Additionally, CBS is exploring other spin-off opportunities to expand the franchise further. However, the network is also mindful of the need to balance its programming slate and avoid oversaturation.
