CBS Officially Seals the Fate of NCIS

CBS has finally confirmed what NCIS has been hinting at for the past few years. The latest episode officially confirmed the titular department is shutting down.

NCIS premiered in 2003 and has become a staple of CBS’ yearly programming, currently airing Season 23. For the past few years, the department has undergone several changes, especially after Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ retirement in Season 19. The most recent episode, “In Too Deep,” officially sealed the fate of the titular department.

NCIS shocked fans with a jaw-dropping revelation in the latest episode, revealing that the agency is shutting down. However, CBS has officially confirmed NCIS will return for Season 24, so everyone was shocked at what the agency closing meant for the series.

The titular agency, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, was properly established in 1992, and its beginning is currently explored in the spinoff NCIS: Origins, which follows Gibbs’ beginning with the organization, which was originally titled NIS before its makeover. The spinoff has just introduced Special Agent Dwayne Pride, who was an important part of Gibbs’ career, as they worked together as part of the task force the Fed Five.

However, the flagship series delivered two major bombshells, as Alden Parker and Leon Vance’s conflict has already raised questions about Army CID’s future. The characters finally resolved their conflict, but even so, it wasn’t enough to save the agency. In the episode, Vance confirmed that he had been fighting for months to save as many jobs as possible.

However, the Secretary of Defense confirmed that the Army CID wasn’t the target, but NCIS itself was. The twist came at the end of “In Too Deep,” which premiered on Mar. 17. At the same time, it also dropped another bombshell for Sean Murray’s Timothy McGee, who found out Olivia Garcia’s 18-year-old son Matteo was his biological son.

NCIS Season 23 had previously teased more changes to MCRT since its debut, and the latest episode officially confirmed the end of an era. However, that doesn’t mean the show is going to end soon.

After the major bombshell about the NCIS shutting down, fans are turning to a major milestone. The following episode, “All Good Feelings,” will mark NCIS’ 500th episode. Set to premiere on Mar. 24, the latest episode has set the 500th episode for greatness, as there are multiple things left to cover.

NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder, who wrote NCIS’s upcoming 500th episode, teased the show will take viewers back to the “beginning” when speaking to TV Insider. “I wanted to go back to the beginning and make sure it was filled with things about our characters that longtime fans would recognize and love.”

The synopsis for Episode 13, “All Good Things,” reads, “When the son of a Marine that Gibbs once helped comes to NCIS in desperation, the fractured team reunites off the books. But chasing justice without a badge may cost them more than their careers.”

NCIS airs new episodes on Tuesdays on CBS, until its Season 23 finale on Apr. 7.
