CBS Quietly Recasts Meemaw in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Twist md13

Just before it celebrates its very first Christmas on the screen, CBS effectively replaces Meemaw in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2. The Big Bang Theory franchise’s newest spinoff may not have that many ties to the nerd-centric sitcom, but it shares its love of the Yuletide season. While Young Sheldon sidelined the holiday entirely, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage revives the Christmas episode tradition in its sophomore year.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 tackles two entirely different storylines. Its final half hour is devoted to the McAllisters’ plan to celebrate Christmas in Miami, as part of Jim and Audrey’s gift to their kids. However, arguably the more interesting plot is the first half of the special, as Georgie and Ruben get into their very first serious conflict as Fagenbacher attempts to drive a wedge between them.

Ruben’s Abuela Is Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’s Perfect Replacement For Meemaw

Because of Annie Potts’ commitment to Best Medicine, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 has had to go on with no appearance from Meemaw yet. The new Fox show is filmed in Upstate New York, while The Big Bang Theory spinoff is based in Los Angeles, so logistics have been difficult. That said, Montana Jordan and Emily Osment show introducing Ruben’s abuela in “Payback and a Partial Shebang” fills the grandparent void that the show has without Connie.

Played by Lidia Porto, Ruben’s abuela has been mentioned a few times over the course of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. It has long been established that Georgie’s partner lives with her, but this is the first time that she makes an on-screen appearance, which establishes her demeanor. While she isn’t as groovy and carefree as Meemaw, it’s clear that abuela is very protective of Ruben — something that Connie also is to her grandkids. It would be interesting to see how her role develops over time.

As previously mentioned, Potts is busy with Best Medicine, so Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage hasn’t been able to bring her back as regularly as they did in season 1. In terms of narrative, the show has yet to offer any concrete explanation as to why Georgie, Mandy, and Baby Cece haven’t run into Connie, considering that the whole show takes place in the same town, Medford. Even then, because of how important Meemaw was to the couple’s love story, it’s odd that they haven’t made an effort to visit her.

Fortunately, there is a benefit to not addressing Meemaw’s odd absence — it keeps the door open for her to return at any point in the future. Because there is no definitive explanation as to why Connie hasn’t appeared, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage can continue operating under the assumption that she is just simply busy and any kind of reunion is happening off-camera.
