CBS Sets Up Sheldon’s Most Traumatizing Moment In The Big Bang Theory

In an unexpected move, CBS is starting to set up Sheldon’s most traumatizing moment in The Big Bang Theory. Before Young Sheldon‘s successful 7-year run, Sheldon’s family life was already prominently tackled in the nerd-centric sitcom. Mary was the first member of the Cooper family to appear in The Big Bang Theory, and that was followed by several more cameos throughout its time on broadcast.

Despite maintaining one continuity, The Big Bang Theory‘s version of Sheldon’s clan was very different from what was shown in the prequel. By the end of Young Sheldon, the show had become a family dramedy — a far cry from just being an origin story for the nerd-centric sitcom.

That said, since the series wrapped up quite early, there were still some storylines that were untold, especially after the death of George. Luckily, while Young Sheldon has ended, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage can still fill narrative gaps in Sheldon’s The Big Bang Theory.

As confirmed by co-creator Steve Holland (via TVLine), Mary will go on a date in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2, episode 3, “A Will and a Dead Man’s Wife”. The decision to explore romance again after the abrupt death of George comes to her over a year since the tragedy.

The Big Bang Theory didn’t reveal much about what happened to the Coopers after the death of George. At that time of its run, the writers likely didn’t have any set story yet, considering that it was established early in its run. That said, The Big Bang Theory effectively revealed certain things about Mary after she lost her husband.

For starters, she was active in the dating scene. In The Big Bang Theory seaosn 7, episode 18, “The Mommy Observation,” Sheldon and Howard went to NASA for a tour. They also made the time to drop by Mary, who was still living in Texas then. In one of the most shocking moments of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon saw his mom having an intimate moment with someone through the window.

Why Sheldon Catching Mary Having Intimate Relations In The Big Bang Theory Was Traumatizing

Mary and Sheldon share a somber glance in Young Sheldon

It’s no secret that Sheldon and Mary’s relationship has always been special, both in The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. The Cooper matriarch’s first appearance in the nerd-centric sitcom came after Leonard called her for help after her son had a serious conflict at work. Unsurprisingly, Mary was the only person who was able to whip him up to shape.

Sheldon respected her mother. That was clear in The Big Bang Theory and was further reinforced by the prequel. He was so enamored by Mary, that the boy genius even agreed to get baptized in the Young Sheldon finale for his mom’s peace of mind. At that point and up until he saw her with her boyfriend, Sheldon assumed that her mom’s world only revolved around him.

Now that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 will see Mary re-enter the dating scenes, fans will see how that process unfolds until she’s finally able to be intimate with someone else. And with Sheldon away in California, it makes sense that he was so surprised in The Big Bang Theory when he caught her with a partner.
