Chicago Fire: Top Moments from “An Even Bigger Surprise” (Season 6 Episode 3)

Matt Casey has proven time and again that he cares more about saving lives than he does about making himself look good, and he’s always been willing to bend the rules when he’s needed to.

On Chicago Fire Season 6 Episode 3, “An Even Bigger Surprise,” he does just that, and the outcome is better than he could have imagined. Meanwhile, Mouch has a surprise for Cruz, and Hope shocks everyone with her own news.

Here are a few of the top moments from “An Even Bigger Surprise.”

Two patients, one ambulance
Gabby and Brett make a tough call to transport two patients in the same ambulance, which is against protocol. Of course, following protocol and waiting for a second ambulance would have been the wrong choice for their patients, so they do what they need to do without much consideration for consequences.

What’s better? They decide together to make that call without needing to say a word. They communicate the whole thing with eye contact, and clearly are on the same page.

“That’s your response to my apology?”
The chief filling in for Boden, Chief Mullins, gives everyone a hard time, and Casey in particular finds himself butting heads with the guy. In hopes to make things a bit better, Casey resolves to do the mature thing and apologize to him. What he gets instead is a lecture about how the firefighters and 51 don’t seem to respect their house.

Say what again?

Casey’s response is calm, but he’s also not going to take that kind of insult. Seriously, how can you have anything bad to say about Firehouse 51?

A fast save.
Honestly, I’ve lost count how many times this team has saved someone from jumping off a roof, but this time, they have to go about it differently.

When Casey realizes there’s no stopping Dan from jumping, he instead decides to try something risky. While Dan is distracted by questions from the police officer, Truck 81 is busy securing a rope. When Dan finally tries to jump, Casey and Herrmann pull the rope just in time to instead knock him backward, saving his life.

That kind of creative thinking and disregard for protocol when it matters most is one of the things that makes this team stand out.

Someone new at Firehouse 51
From the beginning, we could all tell there was something up with Hope. Now for her to suddenly get herself a job at Firehouse 51, when she was supposedly leaving Chicago in just another day?

Boden announcing that news might not be a top moment, but the reactions on everyone’s faces? Especially Severide’s? This is quite a surprise. Oh, and the hell he gets from Stella over it is pretty great, too.

We find out a little more about Hope at the end of the episode, and it’s not good, to say the least. Apparently, she stole ten thousand dollars from her last boss. No wonder she’s taking up residence in Chicago.

Dan’s Sister
The man Casey and Hermann save from jumping off that rooftop? His sister arrives later to say thank you, and it’s incredibly powerful.

Rachel: If it wasn’t for you I would be planning a funeral right now. But instead we’re figuring out treatment. I wanted to take a moment and thank you, thank you all. It’s problem just another alarm bell to you, but to some of us, what you do for us is the whole world.

Captain Casey
Casey is so sure he’s in trouble. From Chief Mullins wanting him to turn in his incident reports to him getting called into Boden’s office, it sounds a lot like his job is on the line.

Mullins is actually impressed with Casey’s willingness to break rules when it means putting a victim first, and he sees throughout his time at 51 what a strong leader Casey is. The reason for being pulled into Boden’s office isn’t because he’s in trouble at all, but rather, because he’s being promoted.

Well-deserved, don’t you think?

You can’t beat the Cruz brothers!
Mouch’s surprise is so thoughtful, but it almost causes a big problem. He’s certain Leon will be safe now, but once Cruz hears his brother might be around, he’s rightfully alarmed.

Cruz figures out what’s really happening sooner than Mouch realizes, though, and he turns it around on them.

It’s a sweet reunion, and a moment that’s both funny and endearing. It’s great to see Cruz with his brother again.
