The actor’s exit from the series comes amid other changes to the One Chicago franchise
Dominic Rains is hanging up his scrubs at Gaffney Medical Center.
The actor, 42, who plays Dr. Crockett Marcel, is leaving Chicago Med after five seasons, PEOPLE has learned.
Rains’ exit was hinted at during the NBC medical drama’s season 9 finale, entitled “I Think I Know You, but Do I Really?” After a young patient of Crockett’s died, the patient’s father committed suicide — a traumatic event that reminded Crockett of the loss of his own daughter from leukemia. When the doctor relayed the news to Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), she told Crockett to take time off.
“Take all the time you need, please,” Sharon said.
While Rains is leaving Chicago Med, Jessy Schram, Steven Weber and Luke Mitchell are expected to return, joining original castmembers Oliver Platt, S. Epatha Merkerson and Marlyne Barrett.
His departure follows the announcement that Chicago Med’s coshowrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider are leaving the series after nine years with Allen MacDonald set to take over.
There have been changes elsewhere in the One Chicago franchise over the last year. Eamonn Walker left Chicago Fire in the show’s season 12 finale, following other departures from the series including Rome Flynn in March and Kara Killmer in February.
Alberto Rosende — who portrayed Gallo for five seasons Chicago Fire — also departed after the NBC procedural’s season 12 premiere. Taylor Kinney, meanwhile, returned as Lieutenant Kelly Severide after going on hiatus to “deal with a personal matter.”
