Torrey DeVitto starred in Hallmark’s 2019 holiday film Write Before Christmas
Write Before Christmas follows DeVitto’s Jessica, a recently heartbroken woman who decides to send five handwritten Christmas cards to people who have made a meaningful impact on her life. Her small gesture sets off a chain of unexpected, heartwarming events. After one card fails to reach her former music teacher in Kenya, the teacher sends her photographer son to Jessica, wanting her former student to have her beloved cello.
Soon enough, a budding romance blooms between Jessica and the single photographer. Meanwhile, Jessica’s cards also reach her neighbor, her brother in the military, her good friend, and a former boy band star, leading to various holiday misadventures and heartwarming tales. Along the way, DeVitto relished the chance to pick up the cello to play Jessica as she dives into her teacher’s instrument.
“She plays cello in the film, which I was so excited to do, and then in pops in Mr. Chad Michael Murray, and they have this thing that develops, and it’s an interesting ride,” DeVitto told Parade. “I was so excited to pick up the cello, because I’m already a violinist, and also working with Chad because he and I did One Tree Hill together, so that was a lot of fun.”

Torrey DeVitto says Chicago Med’s Natalie is “the closest character to me”
While starring in the Hallmark film, DeVitto opened up about the joys of playing Natalie on Chicago Med, appreciating the chance to get out of the scrubs and try something new.
“I love Natalie,” DeVitto told Parade. “She’s the closest character to me that I’ve ever played, but ten months out of the year, sometimes it’s nice to get out of the scrubs. And I honestly thought this script was so cute. It has such a great start, such a great middle, such a great end, and there’s music involved, and just lots of different storylines because of the five cards.”
The last time Chicago Med fans caught up with Dr. Natalie Manning was when she returned to Gaffney in Season 11’s “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades” after her partner, Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) returned to Chicago with Natalie’s son Owen. After Owen was critically injured, Natalie flocked back to the Windy City to make sure her son would make a speedy recovery. Along the way, Chihards learned Natalie Manning is pregnant with her and Will’s baby!
During her Parade interview, DeVitto also touched on the warm and fuzziness of Write Before Christmas, encouraging viewers to send cards to loved ones during such a digital “day and age.”
“To me, writing cards is still so special,” DeVitto told Parade at the time. “I have some friends that I still keep as pen pals, and one of my best friends, who passed away, his mom and I write cards to each other all the time. Receiving that card in the mail is so special. With all the technology of this day and age, I feel like people forget that sometimes something simple is more valuable than trying to find an extravagant gift, and so I love that this movie shows you that, and I hope it’ll put people in the spirit to send Christmas cards this year.”
While you wait for One Chicago Wednesdays to return in January 2026, you can watch every episode of Chicago Med on Peacock.
