Chicago P.D. Season 12 Promises “One of the Darkest Characters Ever” as New Villains Emerge

Chicago P.D. shows no signs of slowing down despite being in its 12th season. Showrunner Gwen Sigan recently revealed that the series plans to throw another serial killer storyline into the mix.

Sigan made the promise when TV Line asked if Season 12 would feature a new villain or two across multiple episodes. “There are a couple, yes,” she said. “I can tell you that one sort of big bad we sort of introduce a little bit in Episode 6 and then Episode 7 you get to know more. And then we’ve got another, I would say one of the darkest characters we’ve done is introduced in Episode 10, which will also be for a few episodes of the season as well. So, yeah, we’ve got some really twisted big bads coming up.”

Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 3, “Off Switch” is a Kevin Atwater-centric episode that spotlights his strengths and those of actor LaRoyce Hawkins.

Chicago P.D. was created by Dick Wolf as a spinoff from Chicago Fire. Per the official synopsis, “the series follows the professional and personal lives of the employees of the 21st District, which houses patrol officers and the department’s elite Intelligence Unit. The team is led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) who must learn to adjust to a changing geopolitical context and adopt new strategies to combat crime in the city he loves.”

Although the cast has changed over the years, the original lineup included Jason Beghe, Jon Seda, Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer, Patrick Flueger, Marina Squerciati, LaRoyce Hawkins, Archie Kao, Elias Koteas, Amy Morton, Brian Geraghty, Tracy Spiridakos, Lisseth Chavez, Benjamin Levy Aguilar and Toya Turner. While Chicago P.D has received mixed reviews from critics, the show has been a hit with fans who enjoy tuning into the procedural police drama.

Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 4, “The After,” addresses fans’ biggest question about Hank Voight – but stops short of letting the NBC show answer it.

Chicago P.D. Season 12 Will Feature Several Guest Stars

Season 12 will also include a few surprise appearances from well-known actors. “I think there’s a lot of opportunity to bring people back that we’ve seen before, some fun guest stars that can come back around,” Sigan said in an interview ahead of the Season 12 premiere. When asked if the new installment would feature a promotion, the showrunner offered a very vague response. “There will be a promotion, yes. Do with that what you will,” she added.

The new season will also focus on the relationship between Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) who got engaged during the Season 11 finale. “They are doing great. They’re in a good space,” Sigan said about the couple. “For us, the fun of it is we finally have them on this really nice footing that they’ve really earned. They’ve fought for it, and I think they’re in this place that now it only gets better. This season, we get to see that bond to grow even closer.”
