Detective First Class Daniel Fitzgerald Reagan is the oldest surviving son of Commissioner Frank Reagan. He is portrayed by New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg.
Having served for 15 years (as of season 1), Danny took a leave of absence from the New York City Police Department to serve two tours of duty in the Iraq War as a Marine. (He enlisted and served in the Marines immediately after high school and before joining the NYPD, and remained in the Marine Corps Reserves and was activated, or volunteered, when the war began.) Danny saw combat in Fallujah and was the only member of his platoon to return home alive (leading to some post-traumatic stress).[8] During his time in the Marines, Danny was decorated for heroism.
He is old school; His hot temper and harsh investigative methods sometimes get him into trouble, which his father worries about. When asked if his son “crosses the line” and violates procedure from time to time, Frank replied, “I think he’s on the line.”[9] Danny is very strict with other police officers and detectives when he feels they are unprofessional or not doing their job. He is currently assigned to the 54th Precinct Detective Division and is partnered with Detective Maria Baez. In “Most Wanted”, it is mentioned that he is the top detective in the Manhattan South District in both collars and complaints.[10] In “Love Stories”, he and Baez are awarded the NYPD Medal of Valor for their actions in “Partners.”
As an NYPD detective, Danny carries a Kahr K9 9x19mm as his duty weapon and drives a Dodge Charger on duty, replacing his previous Chevrolet Impala 9C1. He also owns a Glock 19 9x19mm and previously used a Smith & Wesson 5906 9x19mm. Danny drives a Jeep XJ Cherokee as his personal/family vehicle from Seasons 1 to 5, while Linda drives a rather troubled 2001 Kia Sedona/Carnival; this car was replaced when Henry lost his driver’s license and gave the car to Linda. In Season 6, Danny’s Cherokee was replaced by a fourth-generation Ford Explorer.
Danny Reagan, portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg, is one of the central and most captivating characters in “Blue Bloods.” Danny is a seasoned detective known for his intense approach to his work, often pushing the boundaries to get results.
The most prominent trait of this character is his strong loyalty and determination to uphold justice. He isn’t afraid to face danger and is always ready to do whatever it takes to protect his family and community. Danny’s methods sometimes lead to conflicts, but they also showcase his fighting spirit and relentless dedication.
Danny’s character development throughout the seasons is also noteworthy. He is not only a great cop but also a responsible father, son, and brother within the Reagan family. The personal aspects of Danny’s life give viewers deeper insight into the pressures and challenges he faces, fostering a strong sense of empathy.
In summary, Danny Reagan is a complex yet highly engaging character, combining toughness with compassion, professionalism with personal life. This makes him an indispensable part of “Blue Bloods,” leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
