We can’t deny it: Tony’s been in rare form since his latest return to Days of Our Lives. And by that, we mean he’s out for his family’s company, for revenge and for blood. He not only wants DiMera back, he wants to take the Kiriakis family legacy away from them in retaliation — and he’s willing to fight dirty to do it.
On Tuesday’s episode, Maggie confronted Tony and very pointedly told her friend that being this vicious and underhanded isn’t like him. And while Tony insists he’s just fighting for his family’s legacy, it does seem a bit out of character for the DiMera everyone always loved. Well, before Chad came along and claimed that honor.
And that fits right into the current, very popular fan theory that Tony isn’t Tony, but his evil brother, André! We’ve been a bit hesitant to commit to that theory too much, but it is seeming more and more likely.
Because there was also another little tidbit dropped on Tuesday’s episode that may point to the fact that André came back to town instead of Tony. Philip mentioned to Xander that the last time he fought with Tony over business was their battle over the alternative fuel project — and it ended very badly for Tony!
It’s a bit of a confusing story, but it all began back when Maggie’s granddaughter, Melanie, was working for Titan developing an alternative fuel. She was also obsessed with Philip (who was then played by Jay Kenneth Johnson), and when he started dating Stephanie, tried getting in between them. Philip got fed up, and fired her from Titan until Victor chastised his son for letting the alternative fuel project go.
The DiMeras also wanted the project, so Philip and Tony ended up fighting over who would get to buy it. And we mean literally fighting. The two got into it at the docks, and their battle ended with Tony accidentally falling to his death, impaled on a wooden shard like a vampire. And that was the end of Tony… for about a decade.
During that time, though, dear cousin brother André did what he did best and came back to Salem in Tony’s absence. They looked exactly the same, so he’d been taking over Tony’s life from time to time for decades, almost always to devastating effect.
This time, he didn’t pretend to be Tony for once, but he still made plenty of lives miserable until Abigail finally bashed him over the head with Tony’s urn and killed him. Everyone figured it was poetic justice that “Tony” finally got to kill Andre in revenge for all those years of replacing him. But then Tony turned out to be alive after all and the justice thing was dropped.
As far as we know, André’s still dead, but we’ve thought that before. Plus, he has a bad habit of popping into Salem after Tony’s been gone for a little while. And the last time it happened, it came about after Tony and Philip’s business battle ended in disaster, which Victor’s son just alluded to on Tuesday!
