“You Want Your Circumstances To Be Delicious”: ‘Matlock’ Stars Tease Major Trouble for Their Characters in Season 2
All eyes are on Jacobson Moore’s senior lawyers, Matty (Kathy Bates) and Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), as Matlock gears up for Season 2. Still, there are some huge developments on the horizon for junior lawyers, Sarah (Leah Lewis) and Billy (David Del Rio). Following some cliffhanger discoveries at the end of the season, the characters will grapple with the implications of these developments in their lives. For Billy, it’s the realization that he’s about to become a father, and for Sarah, it’s the potential loss of her job. Sarah skipped protocol and took on a client by herself, exposing the firm to significant risk. “You can’t take a case in a giant law firm without going through the proper channels…. it’s a fireable offense, so that’s what’s at stake,” series showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told TVLine. Sarah’s workplace nemesis, Simone (Andrea Londo), is determined to expose her, posing a significant problem for the YouThree member.
“Simone is going to make so much trouble,” and that “breaks my heart!” Sarah’s portrayer, Lewis, told TV Line about what’s on the horizon for her character in Season 2. “Sarah has been working her ass off for one thing this whole season and finally gets it, but of course the way she went about it [was wrong],” she continued. “I’m excited to see Simone pull out more intensity from Sarah, and see them fight tooth and nail,” Lewis concluded. Regarding his character’s conflicts, Del Rio said:
“This will be the first character I’ve ever played that has to deal with fatherhood. And to be in an environment such as the law game is going to be a real nice ‘two thunderstorms colliding.’ As an actor, you want your circumstances to be delicious.”
What to Expect in ‘Matlock’ Season 2
The second season of the hit series follows Matty’s efforts to seek justice for her daughter, even after being busted by Olympia. “I think since day one of the pilot of Matlock, Olympia has been laser beam focused on justice. Matty has a case. There’s a victim involved. Let’s get to business, but also Julian (Jason Ritter) has a dictator, right? So, who told you to do this, and who told him to do this?,” P. Marshall told TV Insider what the future holds for her character and Matty. She added:
“I think that Olympia, she represents people who don’t have the skill or the will to get justice for themselves, and she will find out who’s responsible and then get the class action from the big boys. I think she is going to go for the big fish and not let all of this fall on my ex-husband.”
Season 2 will also enlist several high-profile guest stars. Melanie Lynskey and Edwin Hodge’s names have been floated, along with several other guest stars that have yet to be revealed. “There are going to be a lot of new characters [in the second season],” executive producer Kat Coiro previously teased.
