WASHINGTON — Demond Wilson, known for playing Lamont Sanford on the NBC Sitcom “Sanford and Son,” has died. He was 79.

Wilson’s sons confirmed the news to multiple media outlets. Wilson’s son, Demond Wilson Jr., confirmed the news to TMZ, saying that the actor died due to complications from cancer. TMZ was the first to break the news.

“I loved him. He was a great man,” his son said to the outlet.

Christopher Wilson later confirmed to the New York Times that the actor had prostate cancer. He died on Friday in his California home near the Coachella Valley.

The actor, whose name was Grady Demond Wilson, was born in Valdosta, Georgia. He studied dance as a child, and made his acting debut in Norman Lear’s “All in the Family.”

The 71-year-old actor was best known for his role as Lamont Sanford in the NBC sitcom. He starred alongside Redd Foxx, who played his father on the show.

“Sanford and Son” ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1977. Following “Sanford and Son,” Wilson starred in two other series: “Baby… I’m Back!” and “The New Odd Couple.”

His last acting credit was in 2023, where he appeared in the show “Eleanor’s Bench,” according to his IMDB.
