Dolly Parton has earned her status as a music industry legend thanks to her ability to not just keep working, but churn out hits for years and years. The singer-songwriter has now been charting tunes on the Hot 100 for more than half a century, and she extends her own record this week with a brand new smash.
Beyoncé recruited Parton to work on her new album Cowboy Carter, and their collaboration has produced one hit on the Hot 100. The two debut their song “Tyrant” at No. 44 on this week’s edition of the ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the U.S.
As “Tyrant” arrives, Parton extends her winning streak on the Hot 100 to 50 years. She debuted on the tally in January 1974 with “Jolene,” which would eventually climb to its No. 60 peak.
“Tyrant” marks Parton’s first new Hot 100 placement in nearly a decade. The last time she debuted a track on the chart was back in December 2005. She joined Brad Paisley on his single “When I Get Where I’m Going,” which rose as high as No. 39 in early 2006
Parton has now charted tunes on the Hot 100 in five different decades, but across six decades. She scored a plethora of hits on the tally in the ‘70s and ‘80s, though her success rate then slowed. She landed just one appearance on the ranking in the ‘90s and the ‘00s decades.
The Grammy winner failed to reach the list with a new win in the ‘10s decade that ended a few years ago. Now, she’s scored her first Hot 100 placement in the ‘20s, thanks to Beyoncé.
In an incredible bit of coincidence, “Jolene” is back on the Hot 100 as well, though not in its original form. Beyoncé covered the cut on Cowboy Carter, and she made it an even bigger hit than the first take. Her version debuts at No. 7 on the tally, easily outpacing Parton’s.
Parton has now collected 21 hits on the Hot 100 throughout her decades-long career. She’s pushed just three of those tunes into the top 10 on the chart, with two of them finding their way to the No. 1 spot.
