Actor Donnie Wahlberg is dropping hints at a star-studded cast for the upcoming Boston Blue spin-off.
Over its impressive 14-year run, viewers have been hooked to the riveting family-centric badges-and-badges drama, Blue Bloods.
Delving deep into crime-solving action while giving us a heartfelt look into the Reagan family’s close-knit bonds—especially during those iconic Sunday dinners at Frank Reagan’s (portrayed by Tom Selleck) residence—the series has been a consistent hit.
However, as CBS confirmed the show’s fourteenth season as its last, with Blue Bloods concluding in October 2024, it surely tugged at many heartstrings.
Yet, there’s a silver lining: earlier this year news popped up that Donnie Wahlberg would be back as Detective Danny Reagan in the new show Boston Blue.
This fresh saga will shadow Danny as he exchanges his NYPD badge for one from the Boston Police Department post the original series finale.
But with an end comes curiosity from loyal fans: who else from Blue Bloods will appear in Boston Blue?
Donnie Wahlberg has already stirred the pot by hinting at possible appearances.
Joe Hill (played by Will Hochman), Frank’s prodigious grandson who stepped into the spotlight in season 10, might just join Uncle Danny in Boston Blue.
Wahlberg took to Instagram, engaging directly with Hochman: “My guy – counting on you to come visit your uncle on screen!”.
In a playful message, Hochman quipped: “I’m fuelling up the Chevelle as we speak!”
A fan got involved, too, asking: “Hope we see Baez on this journey”, which had Wahlberg stirring the pot with nothing but a winking emoji in response.
As Danny and his colleague Detective Maria Baez (played by Marisa Ramirez) have kept fans guessing about their relationship for years, the season ender cranked up speculation by having him invite her to dinner, prompting everyone to wonder what’s next for the pair.
The question is buzzing in fan circles: If Baez makes an appearance in Boston Blue, will romance finally spark between her and Danny?
Doubts from the fanbase surfaced regarding the new spin-off, with one saying: “Far fetched. He’d never leave his family”, but Wahlberg fired back playfully: “Who said he is?”.
Building on that, another fan expressed wanting to see more of the Reagan bunch: “I wish it was the entire family that’s what [makes] Blue Blood work not just one character”, and Wahlberg couldn’t resist teasing again with a reply of “Tune in” paired with—you guessed it—a winking emoji.
Amid the buzz, 55-year-old Wahlberg shared his enthusiasm about Will Estes, who brought Jameson ‘Jamie’ Reagan to life, dropping by Boston Blue, posting on Instagram: “He’d better come visit his big brother”.
Vanessa Ray, known to fans as Eddie Janko-Reagan, also turned heads during a chat with TV Insider when she mentioned she’s open to rejoining her castmates.
When probed about possibly appearing in the Boston Blue spin-off, Ray shared: “I would do anything with these people.
“So, yes, of course. I don’t know what world it would make sense for Eddie to be in a spinoff at all.”
She then humorously added: “But if they need to put me in a wig and dye my eyebrows and I’ll play a different character just so I get to hang out with all of them more, then I’ll do it.”
