After 14 years of playing Detective Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg opened up about the deeply emotional experience of filming the show’s final episode. The series, which has been a staple on CBS since 2010, will be coming to an end after its 14th season. Wahlberg recently shared a touching moment involving his costar, Tom Selleck, which left everyone on set in tears.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Wahlberg described how emotional the last day of filming was, especially when Selleck, who plays the Reagan family patriarch Frank Reagan, came to watch him film one of his final scenes. Wahlberg explained that Selleck showed up in the squad room, where Wahlberg’s character typically works, just to support him.
Wahlberg recalled the moment:
“I’m already emotional, and I look across the room and see Tom. He’s standing in the back corner, watching with tears in his eyes. It just was like the waterworks turned on. I could literally cry just thinking about it.”
Wahlberg also expressed his gratitude for the time spent on Blue Bloods but admitted that the last day on set was particularly emotional for everyone.
“It wasn’t saditude, it was gratitude. But everyone was crying, of course. The last day was heartbreaking.”
In addition to Wahlberg, other cast members, including Bridget Moynahan, have spoken about their sadness over the series ending. CBS announced the decision to conclude the long-running police procedural in November 2023, a move that left some of the show’s stars frustrated. Tom Selleck, who has been with the show since its inception, also voiced his disappointment. He explained how the show consistently performed well in its Friday night time slot but was sometimes taken for granted due to its consistent success.
As Blue Bloods nears its conclusion, Wahlberg and the rest of the cast are cherishing their final moments together on set. The emotional farewell speaks to the deep bonds formed over more than a decade of working on one of television’s most beloved dramas.
