Donnie Wahlberg Reflects on His Most Memorable Family Dinner on Blue Bloods

Since its debut in 2010, Blue Bloods, the CBS procedural police drama, has captivated audiences with the intertwined lives of the Reagan family, most of whom work in law enforcement. Frank Reagan, portrayed by Tom Selleck, serves as police commissioner, while his son Danny, played by Donnie Wahlberg, is a detective, and his daughter Erin, played by Bridget Moynahan, works as an Assistant District Attorney.

The series often focuses on the individual storylines of each family member, but these narratives converge during their traditional Sunday dinners, which take place at Commissioner Frank’s home. These dinners not only emphasize the family’s close-knit dynamic but are also quite challenging to film, often taking up to five hours to complete. The cast has developed their own strategies for getting through them, from snacking on just the meat to sneaking in quick naps afterward.

Despite the lengthy shooting process, some dinners have left lasting impressions on the cast, particularly Wahlberg, who recalls one special dinner that stands out above the rest.

Wahlberg’s First Sunday Dinner: A Memorable Experience

While many might assume that the most poignant dinner for Wahlberg was the first without his on-screen wife, Linda—who was tragically killed off in a helicopter crash—he points to a different moment. Wahlberg revealed to Cinema Blend that his very first Sunday dinner on set remains etched in his memory, primarily because of the intimidation he felt.

In that scene, he had to assert himself among a talented ensemble cast, with Tom Selleck at the head of the table. Wahlberg noted that the presence of Selleck, who sported a mustache reminiscent of his own father’s, added to the pressure. “It was so intimidating,” he reflected. “My character had to dominate the table, and sitting there with that cast and Tom Selleck was overwhelming. My dad used to wear a mustache too, and he was quite intimidating sitting at the head of our table.”

Despite the nerves, Wahlberg rose to the occasion, impressing Selleck in the process. The veteran actor encouraged him, stating, “That’s what’s going to make this show magic.” This moment not only marked a significant milestone in Wahlberg’s journey on Blue Bloods but also showcased the strong camaraderie that defines the Reagan family, both on and off the screen.
