Filming the final episode of “Blue Bloods” proved to be an emotional experience for the cast, especially for Donnie Wahlberg, who shared that he was moved to tears by his co-star Tom Selleck’s presence. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Wahlberg recounted how Selleck, known for his tough-guy persona, brought on the waterworks.
“On the last day, I was filming my squad room scenes, where I hold court as Danny Reagan,” Wahlberg explained. “Tom came in just to watch, and when I looked across the room and saw him standing there with tears in his eyes, it turned on the waterworks for me. I could literally cry just thinking about it.”
Wahlberg expressed gratitude for the experience but acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the finale. “Everyone was crying. The last day was heartbreaking,” he said.
CBS announced the cancellation of the long-running series in November 2023, and both Wahlberg and co-star Bridget Moynahan admitted to feeling more sadness than happiness about the decision. Selleck himself has voiced frustration, noting that despite the show’s success, it often felt taken for granted by the network. “My frustration is that the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go,” he remarked.
Wahlberg reflected on the emotional weight of concluding a show that had been a significant part of his life for 14 years, stating, “In one sense, the 14 years went by in the blink of an eye. In another sense, it’s been 14 years of my life.”
As for whether the series finale does justice to the beloved Reagan family, Wahlberg expressed optimism. “I think the audience will be happy. There’ll be a lot of tears, just like we had. There’s a very sad scene in the middle that will be emotional, but overall, it feels like a hopeful, forward-thinking finale.”
While Wahlberg seems at peace with the show’s ending, Selleck remains hopeful that CBS will reconsider its decision. The second half of “Blue Bloods'” final season premieres on CBS on October 18, leaving fans eager to see how the series wraps up after 14 impactful seasons.
