Donnie Wahlberg Says ‘Something Might Happen to Move’ Danny Reagan Away From NYC in ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot

Donnie Wahlberg’s upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue, is just months away from its fall 2025 premiere, and he assured fans that the show will be much bigger than just his character, Danny Reagan.

“Now it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it, but I can say, you know, if he’s a Reagan, it’ll never be just Danny,” Donnie, 55, told Fox News Digital in an interview published on Thursday, May 1. “They’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away, and, you know, the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”

“Something might happen to move him away from New York. But he’s always going to be a Reagan,” the New Kids on the Block member continued about the new series, which is set in Boston. “I stopped looking at this show, Boston Blue, as a … once I started to let go of Blue Bloods, I started to see the opportunity that Boston Blue was. That it’s really a chance for us to carry on the tradition and the legacy of the show. And I know how important it is to the viewers because I share what Blue Bloods meant. It meant a lot to me as well. So I know there’s a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about it.”

It has not yet been confirmed which other Blue Bloods characters will be appearing on Boston Blue, however, we can assume there will be quite a few cameos from some of our favorite family members.

The exciting opportunity to expand the series came after the Blue Bloods series finale aired in December 2024. During the episode, viewers saw Danny wrestle with his job at the NYPD and his personal life, getting advice from Henry Reagan about not bringing his work home. Toward the end of the episode, Danny asked Maria Baez if she wanted to grab pizza with him.

Baez would be an excellent contender for a Boston Blue cameo considering fans never really got to see her and Danny’s romantic relationship take flight on screen. There were merely breadcrumbs throughout the seasons pointing toward some kind of chemistry between the two as they worked together.

Sadly, Baez was one of the characters left out of the final Reagan family dinner, where the cast got to wave goodbye to the iconic Reagan house. But perhaps Boston Blue will breathe new life into her relationship with Danny or give fans closure about what actually happened between the two.

“Honestly, it didn’t really come to the forefront. Because at the end of their last scene together, there was a hint of a whiff of a promise that they were going to leave that squad and go off to dinner and end up at one or the other’s house, yes,” showrunner Kevin Wade told Deadline in December 2024 of the decision not to include Baez in the show’s final scene with the Reagan family. “But it felt like a big leap, with only two minutes left, after 14 years, to introduce them like that at the dinner.”
