Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Boston Blue’ Enlists an ‘ER’ Veteran for the ‘Blue Bloods’ Spin-Off

The family is growing over at CBS’ Boston Blue, as the Blue Bloods spin-off has added another member to the call sheet. Today, Deadline announced that Emmy Award nominee and ER alum, Gloria Reuben, will be joining the family at the center of the story that acts as the next chapter for Donnie Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagen. The latest addition to the lineup, Reuben, joins the previously announced Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery), Ernie Hudson (The Basketball Diaries), and Maggie Lawson (Psych).

Boston Blue will follow Wahlberg’s cop as he makes his way up to Massachussettes for a fresh start with a new police department. It’s there that he’ll join up with the Boston PD and be paired with a new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green). Just as Danny’s (Wahlberg) family had close ties to the NYPD and the New York justice system, Detective Silver’s family is engrained in that of Boston’s law enforcement community. Reuben has been tapped to play Boston’s District Attorney, Mae Silver, who is also the matriarch of the family at the center of the tale. Mae’s background and her call to her profession is a dark one, as her husband (a judge) was killed on the steps of the courthouse.

Tying the rest of the family together is Mae’s Police Superintendent stepdaughter, Sarah (Lawson), and her father, Reverend Peters (Hudson). The final primary character that still needs to be cast is Mae’s son and rookie cop, Jonah. We can expect Mae to be the voice and heart of the family, as the character is described as putting her loved ones above her profession whenever necessary.

Danny Reagan’s Family Ties

Although no cameo appearances from the Blue Bloods universe have been announced at this time, Wahlberg has teased that there’s always the possibility for other Reagans to make their way up to Boston. Just last month, the actor said,

“Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it — but I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny. There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”

And, although he might be homesick, we’d wager that being the partner of a cop with a tight-knit family will make you part of the family, too.
