Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has addressed the lengthy 12-year gap between Books 5 and 6 in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. The book series that brought the popular HBO series to life has not had a new main installment since A Dance with Dragons was published in 2011. Since then, Martin has been working on Book 6, titled The Winds of Winter, which has yet to be released. released.
Now, u/tell32 has posted a clip of Martin and fellow author Cassandra Clare to Reddit’s r/asoiaf, where the Game of Thrones author acknowledged the 12-year gap between books. He said he knows The Winds of Winter delays have readers waiting, so there’s no reason to always address it. Check out what Martin had to say below:

When Will The Winds Of Winter Come Out?
The Winds of Winter’s title was confirmed in 2012, intended to be the first of two final books within A Song of Ice and Fire. By 2022, ten years later, Martin confirmed the book was 75% complete, with an estimated 400 to 500 pages left to write. While some hope the book will fix Game of Thrones’ TV ending, others simply want to see how the story will play out.
Despite the long wait between books in the series, Martin has not stopped working on the book since it was first announced. However, at the current pace he appears to be writing, it could be another three or four years before the sixth installment gets released. This means The Winds of Winter may not arrive on bookshelves until possibly 2026.
However, this also isn’t the final book in the series, as Martin has yet to write A Dream of Spring, which is expected to be the same length as Book 6. While the next installment may change stories from Game of Thrones to better fit the author’s literary vision, there will still be plenty of story left to explore when the book is done. It may be some time before A Song of Ice and Fire is finally completed, with The Winds of Winter only being the beginning.
