Grey’s Anatomy season 20, episode 7 featured an appearance from a Station 19 character that suggests they could have a future on the medical drama after the firefighter show ends. Station 19 is an important part of the Grey’s Anatomy universe as the only spinoff currently airing after the end of Private Practice and the short-lived web series Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team. With Station 19’s cancelation after seven seasons, many viewers hope that some characters’ stories can continue through appearances on Grey’s Anatomy.
Station 19 first premiered in 2018 with Ben Warren as the crossover character between the original series and its spinoff. The first Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 crossover was also a backdoor pilot that introduced the Meredith Grey of Station 19, Andy Herrera. Fortunately, with news of the cancelation hitting before Station 19 finished filming, the writers were able to come up with a way to wrap the series up, but viewers, cast, and crew alike feel as though there are more stories to tell with the characters.
Carina’s Grey’s Antomy Season 20 Appearance Is A Good Sign For Her Future
Carina’s Story Doesn’t Have To End With Station 19
One character who started on Grey’s Anatomy and later transitioned to Station 19 is Carina DeLuca. Carina was first introduced to Grey’s Anatomy in season 14 as Andrew’s sister and Arizona’s love interest. After Arizona left and a relationship between Carina and Amelia fell through in Grey’s Anatomy, Carina started dating Station 19‘s Maya. Their chemistry led to Carina moving from Grey’s Anatomy to Station 19 for a series regular role in season 4, though she still appeared on the medical drama from time to time.
In Grey’s Anatomy season 20, episode 7, Carina made her first appearance of the season for an OB/GYN case gone wrong. There have been many episodes and cases where Carina could have returned, but her duties on Station 19 have kept her from being involved. With Grey’s Anatomy renewed for season 21, her inclusion in season 20, episode 7 could be a hint at her playing a larger role in the next season.
Jo’s Specialty Change Should Mean More Carina Scenes
Jo & Carina Could Become An Important Duo In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21
The case in Grey’s Anatomy season 20, episode 7 also led to Jo declaring she would drop her general surgery specialty to focus solely on her OB/GYN work. When Jo added the OB/GYN specialty in Grey’s Anatomy season 17, Carina was still on the medical drama in a recurring role. Carina became Jo’s mentor in Grey’s Anatomy as the younger doctor transitioned into the new field. However, once Carina moved to Station 19, almost all of the OB/GYN cases fell to Jo, despite her being a resident and Carina being an attending.
With Carina’s actress Stefania Spampinato no longer having to juggle Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy duties, she could return to that role as Jo’s mentor. This would also allow the series to introduce more OB/GYN cases and continue its important commentary on reproductive rights. Station 19 has basically confirmed Warren’s return to Grey’s Anatomy with his season 20 appearances, and hopefully, fan-favorite Carina will follow him back to their original series.
