Elon Musk Takes the Stage as a Trump Surrogate—But His Impact Remains Uncertain

In the latest edition of From the Politics Desk, we explore how Elon Musk’s involvement in Donald Trump’s campaign could influence the election. Politics reporter Allan Smith examines the potential benefits and pitfalls of Musk’s support, while national political correspondent Steve Kornacki analyzes the strategies both Kamala Harris and Trump are employing in Pennsylvania.

Musk’s recent appearance at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was marked by striking imagery. While Trump captured attention with a dramatic moment following an assassination attempt, it was Musk—energetically jumping on stage—who became the focal point. His presence highlighted both the advantages and disadvantages of his role as a surrogate.

As the world’s richest man, Musk can significantly amplify Trump’s message through his wealth and ability to draw attention. However, that attention isn’t always favorable; Musk’s antics sometimes risk alienating potential voters.

Musk’s embrace of the right has accelerated since acquiring Twitter in 2022, where he has frequently pushed conspiracy theories related to election integrity, immigration, and federal responses to disasters. At the rally, he branded himself as “Dark MAGA” and issued a stark warning: “If Trump loses, this will be the last election,” emphasizing the stakes he believes are at play.

Behind the scenes, Musk is also supporting GOP efforts through his America PAC, which is playing a crucial role in Trump’s get-out-the-vote initiatives. He has even offered $47 to incentivize supporters to get swing-state voters to back petitions related to the First and Second Amendments.

Musk is expected to continue campaigning for Trump in the lead-up to the election. However, recent polling reveals a mixed reception; a September NBC News poll indicated a net approval rating of -11 for Musk. His numbers improve somewhat among men under 50, a key demographic for Trump.

Despite Musk’s high-profile support, his overall unpopularity may pose challenges in swaying voters. Still, the combination of his influence on social media and his PAC’s resources could potentially yield significant results come November.
