“If you look close enough, things reveal themselves,” Carrie Preston’s titular character says in the first-look trailer
A burst of color is about to take New York City by storm, which means Elsbeth is finally back!
PEOPLE has your exclusive first look at the season 3 trailer of the CBS sitcom, revealing some of the A-list guest stars that will appear alongside Carrie Preston’s Elsbeth Tascioni.
The trailer opens with Elsbeth — clad in a hot-pink plaid suit that would make Cher from Clueless drool — asleep on a couch behind a pile of pastel-pink luggage in the office of Scotty Bristol (Stephen Colbert), the host of the fictional late-night show Way Late with Scotty Bristol.
“Sorry, I am jet lagged, which is why I seem a little loopy — although, some people think I always seem a little loopy,” she laughs, as she explains her sleepiness to Scotty and his head writer Laurel (Amy Sedaris) after they abruptly wake her up.
The trailer ends with Wendell Pierce’s New York Police Department Captain Wagner asking Elsbeth, “You aren’t done, are you?” as she shrugs and walks away.
Later, Elsbeth does her best impression of Tom Hanks in Big as she dances on a floor piano in a toy store. Unfortunately for her, this toy store isn’t just for fun and games. A gun-wielding character played by David Cross shows up, telling her to “get out or Raggedy Ann goes home in a body bag” as he points to a stunned employee dressed as the doll character.
Next comes a flurry of shots featuring some of the other celebrities making cameos this season, including current Dancing with the Stars contestant Andy Richter, Masters of Sex alum Annaleigh Ashford, Uncut Gems star Julia Fox, The Good Place alum William Jackson Harper and Sarah Steele — Elsbeth’s pal Marissa Gold from The Good Fight, where Preston originated the Elsbeth character.
Other standout moments include one person asking Elsbeth if she’s a cop, only for her to respond, “No, but I work with the police,” and her getting up close and personal with the camera as she declares, “If you look close enough, things reveal themselves.”
The trailer ends with Captain Wagner asking Elsbeth, “You aren’t done, are you?” as she shrugs and walks away.
According to the synopsis for the season 3 premiere, the episode — titled “Yes, And…” — centers around Elsbeth diving “into the world of late-night comedy when tensions rise between a talk show host (Colbert), his head writer (Sedaris) and her on-air sidekick husband (Richter).”
Given Carra Patterson’s reduced role this season as Elsbeth’s best friend Kaya Blanke, Elsbeth will also be meeting “a new police officer (Lindsay Mendez) who is an aspiring stand-up when off the clock.”
Elsbeth returns with a star-studded season 3 premiere on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 9:30 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT on CBS. Following the premiere, the show shifts to its regular time slot on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
