Elsbeth’s New Case Gets Complicated by a Thrill-Seeking Suspect With Secrets

Elsbeth’s latest murder investigation might have just found its prime suspect — and he’s not exactly being subtle about it. In Elsbeth Season 2, Episode 19, titled “I’ve Got a Little List,” the quirky lawyer-turned-detective (played by Carrie Preston) crosses paths with Rod, an entitled adrenaline junkie played by Billy Magnussen. Rod’s mission? Working through a “bucket list” of extreme thrills — and it just might include murder.

Collider is thrilled to present an exclusive sneak peek from the episode, courtesy of CBS, and let’s just say Rod is raising plenty of red flags. In the clip, Magnussen’s Rod is spotted lingering at the crime scene, fishing for information from Elsbeth about whether there’s been any breakthrough or discovery of evidence. When she tells him there hasn’t been, he looks a little too pleased with the answer. Rod tries to laugh it off as just another example of “typical New York,” but Elsbeth — never one to miss a detail — isn’t buying it. She quickly calls him out, only to realize there’s something even more suspicious: why would a man who just rolled up in a luxury SUV go out of his way to poke around a random murder scene? Uh-oh.

According to the official synopsis, Elsbeth’s efforts to catch the killer this time around will have serious consequences, landing her in major legal trouble herself. Sounds like Rod’s little list of “thrills” could turn into a whole list of problems for our favorite sleuth.

‘Elsbeth’ Season 2 Is Heating Up

The most recent episode gave us an explosive finale to a slow-burning storyline following a quiet couple of weeks. In “I Know What You Did Thirty-Three Summers Ago,” we saw Elsbeth’s investigative work enter overdrive as she tries to prove Judge Crawford (Michael Emerson, Preston’s real-life husband) is a murderer before it’s too late — just in time for him to become a federal judge. A shocking showdown ensued, and we saw the last of Judge Crawford, but now Elsbeth has her next case because, as we know, things never stay quiet for long in the world of crime in New York City.

“I’ve Got a Little List” airs Thursday, May 1 at 9 PM ET on CBS, and will be available to stream live and on demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers, or on demand the following day for Paramount+ Essential subscribers. Stay tuned to Collider for all the latest updates on the second season of Elsbeth.
