Erin’s passing: A huge blow to the Reagan family and the future of ‘Blue Bloods’

ÒKeeping the FaithÓ Ð The job takes a dangerous turn for the Reagans when Eddie and Jamie deal with a domestic violence case associated with an investigation led by Danny and Baez. Also, Frank and his friend, Archbishop Kearns (Stacy Keach), go on a mission to avail themselves to an unfiltered look at the city; and Erin is presented with a surprising offer by her ex-husband, Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann), regarding her run for District Attorney, on the thirteenth season premiere of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Oct. 7 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Blue Bloods season 14, episode 17, “Entitlement,” offered a surprise twist for Erin (Bridget Moynahan) that gave audiences a reason to worry about how the long-running police procedural will conclude other storylines. Over the past 14 years, Erin has had a tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband, Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann), and there has been widespread speculation that they would reconcile in the finale. While the fate of most Blue Bloods characters is still unknown, Erin gets her happy ending in “Entitlement,” as she and Jack walk arm in arm while discussing how well things are going between them.

However, this was surprising, as Jack had not appeared since Blue Bloods season 14, episode 11. Thus, there was no story centered around Erin and Jack deciding to get back together; that happens off-screen, and “Entitlement” reveals that they are a couple again as part of a subplot involving Erin trying to set Anthony (Steve Schirripa) up on a date with a woman who comes into the office as a potential witness in a case. When there is only one Blue Bloods episode left, it is unlikely there will be much follow-up to this revelation.

Erin’s Rushed Blue Bloods Ending Hints At Other Reagans Having A Similar Fate

The Blue Bloods Finale May Be Too Quick To Be Satisfying

While it’s nice that Erin is content, it’s not nearly as satisfying as it would have been had it been given a full story beat. There are five episodes between Jack’s last appearance and “Entitlement,” and Jack simply asking when he would be forgiven by Blue Bloods’ Reagan family is not enough to earn the payoff of him and Erin walking arm-in-arm. Unfortunately, this unsatisfying ending for Erin is concerning because it suggests that the entire finale may be handled the same way.

Blue Bloods’ cancelation is disappointing; however, if the series finale is little more than a regular episode with news about the characters’ fates tacked onto the last few minutes, it will add to the heartbreak of losing the popular procedural, as it will not even have a strong conclusion. Unfortunately, it seems likely that this is the plan for at least one other storyline, as there have been no updates on Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie’s (Vanessa Ray) family planning storyline since they first brought it up.

What’s Left For The Rest Of The Reagans In The Blue Bloods Finale

Several Reagan Family Members’ Fates Are Still Undetermined

Hopefully, Eddie will announce a pregnancy at some point during the finale so that there is at least some payoff for her discussion with Jamie about starting a family. Additionally, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Baez (Marisa Ramirez) should explore whether their feelings for each other could lead somewhere, as well as Danny dealing with the job-related burnout he’s been experiencing lately. These stories should all have been a top priority during the final season, but the best that can be hoped for now is that each character gets a happy ending.
