Every Station 19 Season, Ranked

Station 19 has always been an exciting show, but in its time, some seasons of the hit drama stood out more than others.

Now in its seventh and final season, Station 19 is a first responder/firefighter-focused show that audiences have fallen in love with. Station 19 began as a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, centered around the firehouse that Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ben Warren (Jason George) joined when he decided he no longer wanted to be a surgeon. Since the show kicked off with a back door pilot, Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 14, Episode 13, “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” the show has found its own following and has only gotten better over time.

Throughout the show’s seven seasons, fans have seen the firefighters of Station 19 fall in love, get married, deal with health issues, have children, get divorced, and everything in between. Led by Captain Andrea “Andy” Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) since Season 7, Episode 1, “This Woman’s Work,” the firefighters at Station 19 are a family, and the performances from the actors have made viewers feel like they are part of the family too.

Season 4, which began airing in November 2020, was Station 19‘s first season after the COVID-19 pandemic put filming on hold for much of 2020. Station 19, just like Grey’s Anatomy, incorporated the pandemic into the storyline, which some fans enjoyed, while others would have preferred that the show remain an escape from real life. One thing most fans agreed that the show did well in Season 4 was address police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The season saw four crossovers with Grey’s Anatomy and dealt with events like Robert Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe) getting sober, Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) losing her brother Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti), and Travis Montgomery (Jay Hayden) learning about his father’s hidden sexuality. The season tackled some hard topics beautifully, especially given how filming changed with new COVID-19 guidelines and the shortened season.

The first season of any television show has an enormous task. It must set up any future storylines and introduce the audience to the cast of characters while making sure viewers don’t get lost in the new people. Station 19 had a slight advantage as a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, but it still needed to draw the audience in and entice them to get to know the firefighters of Station 19.

Season 1 saw the Station 19 firefighters step up for each other time and again, whether it was to support Pruitt and Andy through Pruitt’s diagnosis or when Travis, Maya, and some of the others help Victoria Hughes (Barrett Doss) through her fear of fire after being trapped in blue fire in Season 1, Episode 2, “Invisible to Me.” The season finale perfectly sets up Season 2 and leaves the audience on a breathtaking cliffhanger.

Season 3 of Station 19 is a tale of two Pruitts. Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) has a daughter with his ex-girlfriend in Season 3, Episode 6, “Ice Ice Baby,” and her mother leaves her with Miller in Season 3, Episode 7, “Satellite of Love.” When Dean struggles to care for her, it is his former captain who helps him figure out what to do, and Miller names his daughter Pruitt Arike Miller in honor of the captain. Just a few episodes later, Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval) makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his team in Season 3, Episode 12, “I’ll Be Seeing You.”

Season 3 also sees the Station 19 firefighters experiencing love and dealing with trauma. The biggest disappointment of Season 3 is that some of the storylines built during the season had to change due to the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, but the show did a wonderful job of wrapping up the season even though their ability to film the show was cut short.

The season continues to dive into who the characters are and gives them numerous challenges to overcome. Its most powerful moments come in Season 2, Episode 15, “Always Ready,” and Season 2, Episode 16, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” when Ripley’s involvement in a fire takes a tragic turn and the firefighters at Station 19, especially Hughes, must learn to move forward.

5 “In My Tree” 12 7.4/10 March 17, 2022 Station 19 opens the Dean Miller Memorial Clinic, and Sullivan gives Beckett an ultimatum.

The fifth season of Station 19 is one of the best-written and performed seasons of the show. Season 5, Episode 5, “Things We Lost in the Fire,” puts several firefights from both Station 19 and Station 23 at risk and sees the Station 19 crew losing one of their own. Season 5, Episode 15, “When the Party’s Over,” is a powerful look at coping with sexual assault, and Jaina Lee Ortiz gives one of her most powerful performances of both the season and the series in the episode.

After a Season 4 that was a little rough around the edges, the writers and producers of Station 19 used Season 5 to take the show to a brand new level. The show skips forward a year to a “future that we hope for, “allowing them to move on from COVID-19 even when the world hadn’t. Season 5 will have audiences weeping at what the Station 19 firefighters lose and beaming at what they gain.

Season 7 is Station 19’s Magnum Opus

5 “Good Grief” 2 7.9/10 March 21, 2024 Ben and Theo respond to a challenging Crisis One call, Vic joins Beckett at an Irish Wake, and the team honors Jack with a final dinner.

Though there are still two episodes left in the season, Season 7 has been Station 19‘s best from the very beginning. Whether it’s a new showrunner, eventually knowing that the show is on its way out, or the show finally hitting its stride, the writers and producers have raised the bar with Station 19‘s final season. It’s just one of the reasons fans are so disappointed in the show being canceled.

So far in Season 7, Andy has finally been made captain, Gibson has been forced to retire due to his health, Maya and Carina have adopted a baby, and Hughes has struggled with—and worked through—some serious mental health issues. Though some fans are still hoping to see Station 19 be picked up by a streaming platform, it’s safe to say that if Season 7 is truly the last time audiences see this show, it will go out on top of the world.
