FBI nights are about to look a lot different. Variety confirmed on March 4, 2025, that CBS had canceled both FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, leaving the original FBI as the last show standing from the Dick Wolf franchise.
FBI: Most Wanted — which premiered in 2020 and follows the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New York Fugitive Task Force as they track down criminals on the FBI’s Most Wanted list — is set to end after its current sixth season. FBI: International — which premiered in 2021 and follows the FBI’s international Fly Team as they neutralize threats against American interests in Europe — is set to end after its current season four.
Why were FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International canceled?
While CBS hasn’t confirmed the reason for FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International’s cancellations, it’s assumed that the shows were cut to make way for CBS’ upcoming spinoff, FBI: CIA, which is set to follow a “dedicated, strait-laced FBI agent and a street-smart CIA agent are part of a new, clandestine taskforce charged with solving and preventing domestic terrorism in and around New York City.”
At first, fans speculated that CBS would cancel FBI: International, so that the network could keep its three-hour time slot on FBI night. FBI: International was the most vulnerable, given that FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, and FBI: CIA are all set in New York City, allowing for more natural crossover episodes. (FBI: International films in Budapest, Hungary, and other parts of Europe.)
While FBI: International was the most likely show to be canceled, both International and Most Wanted were on the bubble, as both series were only given one-season pickups set to end in May 2025. FBI, for its part, was renewed for three seasons through the 2026/2027 season.
All in all, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that CBS canceled two FBI shows. In May 2024, Deadline reported that CBS had cut the guaranteed minimum episodes for series regulars on FBI and FBI: Most Wanted by two episodes, which should’ve been a sign that the network was deprioritizing the FBI franchise due to the cost of the long-running franchise. (FBI: CIA is likely cheaper to produce than its counterparts because it’s a new series with a cheaper cast.)
CBS also is no stranger to greenlighting new spinoffs while canceling old ones. In April 2024, news broke that the network had canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The news came four months after CBS announced that an NCIS prequel, titled NCIS: Origins, was in the works. The cancellation also came amid news that the network was also working on another NCIS spinoff centered around Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
