Whether or not ABC realizes its mistake in cancelling Station 19 and reverses its facepalm-worthy decision, the second offshoot of Grey’s Anatomy could still live on — no intubation tube or EKG paddles needed, even. All that the network would have to do is listen to the show’s brokenhearted fans and greenlight a spinoff of the spinoff.
Station 19 EPs Break Down the Series Finale’s Unhappy Ending, Spinoff-Worthy New Beginning and That Bittersweet Cameo
As luck would have it, Peter Paige and Zoanne Clack, the showrunners whose superlative first season at the helm turned out to be the first-responders drama’s last, used the series’ finale to set up a number of tantalizing possible premises. Via the firefighters’ visions of their futures, we got a glimpse of what each of them hoped was coming down the pike.
Though Paige hastened to tell TVLine that these very personal “previews” weren’t necessarily “written in stone,” we wouldn’t be mad if they were at least typed into scripts. Some of them were so good that they played less like “to be continued” sneak peeks than “must be continued” ones.
Keep scrolling to see how Paige and Clack’s ideas (and ours) might lend themselves to new iterations of Station 19, then hit the comments to pitch your spinoff concepts.
Vic and Travis Realize Dean’s Dream
It wasn’t Vic’s imagination. At the end of the finale, Travis showed up at the airport ready to move to Washington, DC, with her. Together, they would take Crisis One national and keep intact what was arguably primetime’s closest friendship. Would any Station 19 fan not be beyond happy, eager, to follow them on their journey?
‘Marina’ Juggles Three Kids and Two Careers
When Station 19 wrapped, the marrieds were well on their way to adopting Liam, Carina was expecting her and Maya’s baby, and Maya was open to getting pregnant herself. But how would the busy doctor and future captain balance their demanding jobs with their expanding family? Regardless of the answer, we’d be delighted to tune in and find out.
Jack Opens a Home for Foster Kids
The showrunners regretted that the finale didn’t leave room for a flash-forward in which Gibson was stepping up as the father figure that he’d wished he had growing up. They could still play out that scenario, however, in a spinoff that would also reveal whether Andy’s vision of a reunion with her old flame ever really came to pass.
Sullivan and Ross Take Over Seattle
C’mon, these two have always had “power couple” written all over them. And an offshoot that follows her ascension to mayor and his efforts to help military veterans become firefighters would allow them to really lean into their potential while we’d get to continue savoring the chemistry that was always threatening to fry our TVs!
Ben Is Forced to Go It Alone
Per our sister site Deadline, Jason George is already in talks to bring his character back to Grey’s Anatomy to finish his surgical residency. But what if there was no room at the inn? What if with one budget cut after another, it just couldn’t happen? Then we might be looking at a spinoff in which Bailey’s husband has to resist temptation while scrubbing in away from Seattle.
