During an appearance on *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* on Wednesday night, Highmore confessed that despite spending a significant amount of time living and filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, he didn’t fully take advantage of the region’s offerings.
Highmore, who is well-known for his early roles in films such as *Finding Neverland* and *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, has been based in Canada since the series premiered in 2017. He played Dr. Shaun Murphy, an autistic surgeon with a photographic memory.
When Kimmel asked about his experience filming away from his home in London, Highmore said, “Yes, I will miss it. I’ll miss the crew, they were wonderful, and everyone became like family, including the cast.” He then mentioned his regret about not embracing the Canadian outdoors more. “I feel like my one regret is not fully embracing my inner Canadian outdoorsy self,” he admitted.
Kimmel probed further, asking if Highmore ever wanted to try more extreme outdoor activities.
Highmore recounted being challenged about his camping experience: “They’d ask, ‘Have you been camping?’ and I’d say, ‘Yeah.’ Then they’d push further, ‘Have you done backcountry camping, hiked for days, carried all your stuff, dealt with bears, set up your tent, and taken a cold plunge in the river?’ And I’d have to admit, ‘No, I haven’t done that!’ The cold plunge just doesn’t appeal to me—I think there are more enjoyable ways to get a good buzz.”
Kimmel shared Highmore’s aversion to cold plunges, saying, “I think about it for maybe 45 minutes a day, and the more I’m against it, the more everyone around me seems to be for it, claiming it’s great for you without any real evidence or studies to back it up.”
When Highmore asked if Kimmel had tried it, Kimmel replied, “I have, and I’ll tell you: It’s terrible.”
