While The Big Bang Theory was skyrocketing in popularity, Kevin Sussman (Stuart) was going through one of the toughest times in his life. In the middle of the show’s run, he was dealing with a divorce and living in a tiny studio apartment — with a bed right in the middle of the room.
On set, fans and colleagues saw him as part of one of TV’s biggest hits. Off set, he’d go home, lie on his bed, and feel the weight of loneliness and depression. The contrast was jarring — going from being recognized like a celebrity to feeling like a failure behind closed doors.
One surreal moment happened when Kevin, lying in bed watching TV, forgot to lock his door. A stranger wandered in, thinking it was another apartment. They exchanged a strange look, almost as if the man recognized him, before the intruder awkwardly apologized and left.
Kevin admitted it always felt strange — one foot in the glamorous world of a hit show, the other in a small apartment wondering where he truly belonged. Even when he became a series regular, he sometimes went long stretches without appearing in episodes, leaving him sitting at home, eating cereal, and thinking, “I’m on that show… but I’m also just here.”
