From Sitcom Star to Serious Actor: The Versatile Career of Simon Helberg

Night Court became something of a Big Bang Theory multiverse in the dramatic two-episode season 3 finale.

The episodes, which aired on Tuesday, May 6, revealed that Melissa Rauch’s Abby Stone is married to Simon Helberg not only in The Big Bang Theory, but also in the courtrooms of Manhattan, in a shocking twist that left fans reeling.

The revelation came after Dan (John Larroquette) accidentally revealed to Abby that her boyfriend Jake (Ryan Hansen) was planning to propose that night, leaving her giddily awaiting his arrival in her office — and making Helberg’s entrance as Spencer all the more dramatic

Instead, Spencer showed up at Abby’s door. “What the f— are you doing here?” she asked him as he smirked in the doorway.

“Just came by to give you this,” Spencer said, approaching her and giving her a big kiss on the lips, just in time for Ryan to arrive, too.’

“Who’s this guy?” Ryan asked, confused after catching another man kissing his girlfriend.

Spencer cheekily revealed, “I’m her husband,” as he held up his ring finger and showed off his wedding band.

Rauch, 44, said it was a “dream” to get to work with Helberg again and surprise fans with the sweet moment six years after the actors said goodbye to their first onscreen married couple, Bernadette and Howard, in The Big Bang Theory.

“Since the show started, I’ve wanted to bring him onto the show, but I wanted to make sure that it was the perfect role for him,” she told TV Insider. “I called him and he was so wonderful and was like, ‘I’m totally there.’ And he was just wonderful as he always is.”

She continued, “We’re of course very close and he’s family to me, so we’re very much in touch, but we hadn’t been on set together since Big Bang Theory ended, and to be back at Warner Brothers together on that stage, it was emotional … It just felt like going home, getting to work with him again.”

Helberg is not the first Big Bang Theory star to make an appearance on Rauch’s new show. Earlier in season 3, Mayim Bialik played a fictionalized version of herself on Night Court and was a defendant in Rauch’s courtroom.

It had been a “dream” of Rauch’s to get Bialik, 49, on the show, she told PEOPLE, and the actress was into the idea, “but it was very casual.”

“I was just so excited at the idea that she would want to have me on,” Bialik, who is a “huge fan” of the series, told PEOPLE. “I thought maybe I would do a scene or a little cameo. I didn’t know it would be like a full episode, and I get to interact with all of the cast members, which was really fun.”
