Fuller House provides an explanation of why Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) was never at her own home and always at the Tanners’ house in Full House.
Fuller House explained why Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) was never in her own home in Full House. As DJ’s (Candace Cameron-Bure) best friend, the eclectic character was almost always at the Tanners’ home. She hung out a lot at her next-door neighbors, so much so that at times, the older cast members wondered why it felt like she also lived there.
More than two decades after Full House wrapped up, Kimmy officially moved into the Tanner family home in Fuller House to help DJ, whose first husband has just died. Similar to Danny’s (Bob Saget) predicament in the original series, the eldest Tanner daughter was left to raise three young sons, and so her best friend and sister, Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) went to live with her to help ease the burden of being a single mom.
Admittedly, not everyone was thrilled that Kimmy was always around in Full House. In fact, aside from DJ, the whole Tanner clan typically had a contentious relationship with her. She picked on Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen), and most especially Stephanie. She made fun and sometimes even straight disrespected Danny and made Jesse (John Stamos) uncomfortable with her advances. While there’s no serious bad blood between Kimmy and the rest of DJ’s family, she was mostly treated as a nuisance, which was fair at times considering how odd and antagonistic she could be. That said, after Fuller House, it makes sense that she never wanted to be home.
As revealed in the Full House spin-off, Kimmy has a brother in Jimmy (Adam Hagenbuch). Aside from the fact that this poses some continuity questions considering that Kimmy never mentioned anything about having a younger sibling in the original series, the existence of Jimmy explains why she always wanted to be with the Tanners. It’s long-established that Kimmy isn’t the brightest kid; both Stephanie and Michelle typically pointed this out in an effort to annoy her and she’s typically shown copying DJ’s homework.
Despite her tendency to be uppity about certain stuff, she’s aware of her low-intellectual ability and it didn’t’ seem to bother her that much. This made for some laughs in the cult classic family sitcom and was something that Fuller House continued to do. However, as vapid as Kimmy can be, it’s clear that Jimmy is much denser than she is. It takes a much longer time for him to figure things out, and he makes the most absurd comments that it’s a wonder how Stephanie fell in love with him. If Kimmy didn’t hang out with DJ and her family — who, despite their own oddities are fairly normal, she would’ve likely become as dull as her brother.
Kimmy supposedly has other siblings as revealed in Full House, but they were never mentioned in Fuller House. Interestingly, like Michelle, they weren’t also invited to the series finale wedding even if both she and Jimmy were tying the knot to different people in the same ceremony. In any case, given what fans have seen with Jimmy, one could only wonder what their other siblings are like. As revealed in the final season, the Gibblers’ parents are also quite weirdos as well, so perhaps quirkiness runs in the the family.
