Game Of Thrones: 10 Best Deleted Scenes
Game of Thrones is one of the greatest and most immersive TV shows ever made, and there are many released deleted scenes that vary in quality.
first
HBO’s Game of Thrones is one of the most enormous shows ever made, and with that scope, unessential scenes must be cut. However, many of those deleted scenes still offer value to the show, clearing up inconsistencies and adding details to character motivations. In other instances, the deleted scenes were simply fun character moments. From all eight seasons, the deleted scenes come out to be nearly an hour of extra footage, meaning almost an entire episode of supplementary Game of Thrones.
Some deleted scenes from Game of Thrones are barely worth watching and were understandably kept out of the aired episode for the sake of pacing. Season 1 never released deleted scenes, as everything that was shot made the final cut of the series, with them even having to shoot extra scenes to fill time. After that, each season included additional scenes in the DVD release, ranging in duration and quality. After the Game of Thrones ending, the best deleted scenes are worth checking out.
1 Tywin Calls Out Pycelle
Season 3
The Game of Thrones deleted scene between Tywin Lannister and Grand Maester Pycelle is the most unique, and it’s shocking that it didn’t make the cut. First, Tywin is seen fishing, demonstrating that he has hobbies and activities aside from politicking. It’s strange to see him out of his usual environment. The most clever aspect of the scene shows Pycelle giving up his fragile old man act, standing up straight, and explaining his steadfast loyalty to House Lannister. It’s a significant character reveals that’s otherwise left out of the show.
2
Margaery And Loras Mourn Renly
Season 2
Following Renly Baratheon’s death, the Tyrells are mainly absent in season 2 before arriving with Tywin to save King’s Landing at the end of the Battle of the Blackwater. A deleted scene shows Loras mourning for his lover and king, and Margaery attempts to adjust his focus back on track, as she still aspires to be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. The scene foreshadows them siding with the Lannisters to get removal revenge on Stannis, so it makes sense to build up the surprise for later. Still, it’s a solid moment for the Tyrell siblings that expresses their values.
3
Varys And Littlefinger Discuss Harrenhal
Season 3
After Littlefinger is awarded Harrenhal, he and Varys discuss the castle’s famous curse. It’s a fun tidbit of lore, but the primary attraction of the scene is seeing Varys and Littlefinger banter and make threats together. Some of the most excellent Game of Thrones scenes occur between these two characters in the same room, exchanging verbal blows about their strategies and motivations. Any scene with Varys and Littlefinger is a treat, and this deleted scene easily could’ve stayed in.
4
The Small Council Discusses The Night’s Watch
Season 3
Those in King’s Landing rarely take the Night’s Watch very seriously, and in season 3, Varys informs Tywin Lannister of Mance Rayder’s wildling army in the North. Naturally, Tywin doesn’t worry much about the impending invasion, suggesting it’s a problem for the North and that they should send an envoy to meet with Mance. Some of Game of Thrones’ most fascinating dialogue scenes in the early seasons are when characters discuss situations in other corners of the world with whom they don’t share scenes.
5
Dorreah Kills Irri
Season 2
At the end of Game of Thrones season 2, Daenerys finds Irri murdered with little explanation. Her death is explained by a deleted scene that shows her strangled by the handmaiden Dorreah. Dorreah and Irri are two minor characters in seasons 1 and 2, and while clearing up her death isn’t that important, it’s easy to miss otherwise. Dorreah ends up trapped in the vault with Xaro Xhoan Daxos in the season 2 finale.
6
Olenna And Mace Tyrell Discuss The Sparrows
Season 6
In season 5, Cersei sends Mace Tyrell to Bravos to “negotiate with the Iron Bank,” though her motivation is just to get him out of the way as she plans to eliminate the Tyrells in King’s Landing. In a deleted season 6 scene, Mace Tyrell discusses the situation with his far more clever mother, Olenna. She points out how gullible he’s been, leading to his children being captured by the Sparrows. The two conspire to help free Margaery and Loras, intending to leave King’s Landing afterwards. It ties up Mace’s return from Bravos and importantly demonstrates the Tyrell strategy and family values.
7
Bronn Advises Shae About King’s Landing
Season 4
In season 4, Tyrion sends Shae to Pentos in order to protect her from Cersei, who threatens to kill her. He sends Bronn to escort Shae to her ship, and in an extended deleted cut of the scene, the two have a conversation on the way down. Bronn relates to Shae, saying that the people of King’s Landing will never treat them right and that the only solution is to adapt to the environment and play the game. Bronn isn’t commonly considered one of the smartest Game of Thrones characters, but the deleted scene shows just how strategic he’s been.

Robb Stark Discusses Strategy With His Bannermen
Season 3
In Game of Thrones season 3, Robb Stark berates his uncle Edmure Tully for making a poor strategic decision and losing the chance to capture the Mountain. In an extended version of the scene, the moment before is displayed where Robb publicly praises Edmure for his victory at the mill. He hides his immense frustration and does this to demonstrate solidarity in front of the Northern lords, including Rickard Karstark, who he later executes. The deleted extended portion of the scene shows Robb’s political tactics in an effort to hold his cause together.
9
Sansa Stands Up To The Hound
Season 2
The Hound becomes an unlikely protagonist throughout Game of Thrones, but it would’ve been hard to believe had his season 2 deleted scene with Sansa been left in the series. He approaches her in the halls of the Red Keep, suggesting that Joffrey will be “having her” soon, then grabs her. Given that he’s the person who saved her from assault in season 2, this scene will’ve extracted from that. Still, it shows how spiteful the Hound is about his position, shows Sansa standing up for herself, and ends with Tyrion showing his sympathy for her.

10 Tormund And Ser Alliser Thorne Exchange Words
Season 5
In season 5, Tormund is shown being taken into captivity at Castle Black after the battle. He’s approached by Ser Alliser Thorne, who taunts him, suggesting that if it were up to him, he would do unspeakable things to Tormund, likely killing him. Tormund cleverly rebuttals, reminding Alliser that he isn’t in charge, to which the crabby knight storms off. Alliser is a valuable asset to the Night’s Watch, but his prejudices and emotions constantly get the best of him.
