It’s been quite some time since Game of Thrones fans have seen their favorite members of the TV adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s books splashed across the small screen, but now, the cast has been given a new makeover thanks to a dedicated fan, which includes replacing key characters with that of iconic actors from the 2000s.
Even though the topic surrounding how the series ended has unfortunately engulfed many of the show’s incredibly brilliant moments, many people seem to forget that the fantasy show brought in hundreds of thousands of eager watchers across its eight seasons, with its premiere alone bringing in 46 million viewers. Not only is this an incredible feat for any series to undertake, but it also showcases how popular its stellar lineup of characters was. From fans’ love/hate relationship with Cersei Lannister, the powerful leader and dragon rider Daenerys Targaryen, and the flawed yet likable Jamie Lannister, Game of Thrones captivated its viewers in the most remarkable way, making it one of the most compelling TV shows in recent years, along with the likes of The Walking Dead and Stranger Things. Now, after its final episode aired on May 19, 2019, the cast is replaced and taken back through the vortex of time.
Game of Thrones Cast Is Replaced by Hollywood Stars From the 2000s
On Reddit, a Game of Thrones fan has completely recast the characters fans know and love with actors from across the 2000s era. While many of them seem like a pretty good fit, with many fans agreeing with some of the choices, others are somewhat questionable, but let’s start with the positives. Coming into play Jon Snow is Orlando Bloom, who is a pretty decent choice, and given how well he took on the role of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean, he’s certainly not afraid to get his hands dirty or even ride a dragon. Another great recast is the character of Daenerys Targaryen, who, for this fan recast, is played by Natalie Portman and Warwick Davis stepping into the shoes of Tywin Lannister.
The legendary Liam Neeson has also been thrown in as the head of the Stark family, Ned. However, as the rest of the cast changes faces with Hollywood stars from the 2000s, things start to take a bit of a slide, particularly Leonardo DiCaprio as Theon Greyjoy, who is far too old to have played the youngest son of King Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands, even over 20 years ago. The same can be said for Joaquin Phoenix, who is penciled in to play the young and cruel Joffrey Baratheon. For the most part, fans were pretty happy with the fancast, with one stating, “Christopher Lee is the only man other than Charles Dance who I could ever envision playing Tywin”, while others were in agreement with Brad Pitt taking the role of Jamie Lannister, “Brad Pitt as Jaime is 100% true”, “Brad Pitt as Jamie seems spot on, but I feel like Cersei can be played by Michelle Pfeiffer or Cate Blanchett instead.”
Although fans won’t get to see the cast reunited again, for those eager to jump back into the Game of Thrones universe instead, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will now premiere in 2026 rather than this year after receiving a delay. While there isn’t a release date as yet for House of the Dragon Season 3, this too is set to air in 2026.
