Game of Thrones Movie in the Works After Jon Snow Sequel Series Cancelation

After getting multiple prequel shows on HBO, Game of Thrones may next be expanded to the big screen. After becoming one of the most successful television shows in history during its run, the hit series reportedly has a tie-in feature film that’s now in the works.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Game of Thrones feature film is in development. Fans should not expect to see the film in the very near future, however, as it’s still in its very early stages. As of now, there hasn’t been a writer or director attached to the project. No plot details were given and it’s unclear if the movie would follow the events of Game of Thrones, opening the door for characters from the TV series to return, or if it would be another prequel story in the vein of House of the Dragon.

It was speculated in the THR report that the newfound openness at HBO to make a Game of Thrones movie could be the result of changes in leadership. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who developed the series inspired by George R.R. Martin’s literary works, had wanted to conclude the story with a trilogy of feature films. It was previously reported that the duo’s request was denied as HBO wanted to keep the small screen as the exclusive way to enjoy the hit series. With Casey Bloys now steering the ship at HBO, it’s possible that there’s more interest in finally making the leap to the big screen for the fantasy show.

Perhaps HBO is seeing the benefits of having franchises that connect the small and big screens. Just recently, The Penguin, a spinoff of the theatrical film The Batman, has proven to be a big hit for HBO with high viewership and great acclaim. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies are getting a tie-in TV series, dubbed Dune: Prophecy, that’s coming to HBO. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery will be taking Harry Potter franchise into a new medium as well with the upcoming reboot series that is in the works for the small screen.

It would also seem that there are still hopes alive for keeping the Game of Thrones franchise going beyond its multiple spinoffs. House of the Dragon will be ending with its fourth season, though fans also have Season 3 to look forward to before getting to that point. Another prequel show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to debut in 2025. It remains to be seen if that show will be getting any additional seasons.

A Jon Snow Sequel Series Was Nixed

The Game of Thrones movie could potentially give fans of the show some answers about the surviving characters after the events of the series finale. This was something that came close to happening, as a planned sequel series featuring Kit Harington’s Jon Snow was in the works at one point. However, the project was ultimately scrapped. Harington would later share that it was his decision to shut the series down, as he didn’t feel confident enough about the ideas pitched to bring the character back.

“What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no,” Harington told GQ earlier this year. “And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way.”

The actor continued, “We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn’t… nothing got us excited enough. In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.’”

Game of Thrones is streaming on Max.
