Checking the Vitals
It’s safe to say that the dust has finally settled at General Hospital. You’ll recall that in January of 2024, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor were let go as the show’s headwriters and replaced with Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte. A few months later, Mulcahey was out, and Van Etten was back in and working alongside Korte to steer the ship. Now that the tag team’s vision for ABC’s only daytime drama (for now) is coming into focus, Soaps.com is looking at what’s working, what isn’t, what we’re excited about and what has us… um… concerned. They’ve Still Got It
The re-pairing of Lucky and Elizabeth is a slam dunk. Jonathan Jackson and Rebecca Herbst conjure up the same magic that made us fall for the couple in the first place.
I Spy
Sorry, but we’re not buying Josslyn starring in her own version of Alias. And did we have to lose Dex to be given Vaughn, who is just an older, crankier version of him?
Nice and Naughty
Ava and Ric are a match made in hell — and we mean that as a compliment. They’re the best scheme team since Scotty and Heather hooked up in the 1980s.
The Parent Trap
Sasha and Jason pretending that he’s her babydaddy feels too much like a redo of his pretending to be Carly and Sam’s babydaddies to resonate.
Hate-Watching Is Still Watching
The show has made Drew and Willow so unlikable that we’ve gone from detesting them to delighting in anticipation of their downfall.
Fallen on Heart Times
Not sure why Sonny was saddled with cardiac issues, given that we were never for a moment afraid that he’d croak. But if it gets him out of the Mob, we’ll forgive it.
Sparks Aplenty
We’re digging the match-up between Cody and Lulu even though we’re still bitter about the horrible way he was torn apart from Sasha. (They were lovely.)
Why Is She Still Here?
General Hospital introduced Natalia as loathsome, never made us like her and has now built a whole family around her. Why? When a character’s a fail, cut bait and move on.
A Warming Trend
Trina and Kai are cute together and have loads of potential. All we’re missing is that element of swoon-worthy romance to push us from liking them to loving them.
We Don’t Talk About Bruno… Er, Austin
So, is the show really never going to reveal who killed Roger Howarth’s third character and sent that note to Ava? Come on now!
Kid Stuff
The imminent reveal that Gio is Brook Lynn and Dante’s son promises to generate such a spectacular mess of drama that we’ll overlook the rewriting of history that it took to get here.
Help Wanted
That said, is Lois never going to get to drive a story of her own? Why isn’t the show exploring what a Lois/Sonny pairing would look like? (Hint: a lot like the picture above.)
Mental Hopscotch
Everywhere Kristina goes, disaster follows — which makes her an ideal soap character. She can be exhausting, sure, but agents of chaos are supposed to be. (It’s in the rules!)
Romance Remix
Some viewers will always miss Charles Mesure — and he was good. But Chris McKenna has slipped into a groove as Brennan and is sparking nicely with Laura Wright’s Carly.
