Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Must Do Missy Justice After Her Limited Role In Season 1

Since Missy had such a small role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1, season 2 of Young Sheldon’s spinoff must now explore the character’s dramatic adolescence further. The priorities of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage are right there in the show’s name. The title of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage implies that the couple will break up and possibly even remarry, something that is confirmed in The Big Bang Theory season 11, episode 23, “The Sibling Realignment.” In that outing, Sheldon finally reunites with his older brother Georgie.

In “The Sibling Realignment,” Georgie references his “Ex-wife,” but he and Mandy seemed happily married and destined for a bright future in Young Sheldon’s ending. As such, the spinoff’s entire job was to explain how this happy couple ended up separated, although the show needed to introduce a few new characters in the process. Thus, viewers got to know Mandy’s family throughout season 1 as the couple moved in with them. Although Connor got a handful of subplots devoted to him, not all of Young Sheldon’s existing characters were as fortunate as the spinoff’s new stars. Meemaw and Mary played pretty central roles in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1, as Mary was often embroiled in conflict with Mandy’s mother, Audrey, and Meemaw restarted her infamous gambling schemes from Young Sheldon with Mandy as her accomplice. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 will feature more from Mary now that she co-owns Georgie’s tire store, as his mother came through for him in the season 1 finale.

Mary put the Cooper family home up as collateral for Georgie’s fledgling tire store business when Jim sold the store, meaning she is guaranteed to play a bigger role in season 2 of the spinoff. However, Georgie’s little sister Missy barely got a look in throughout Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1, even though she played a major role in Young Sheldon seasons 6 and 7. Episode 17, “Two Idiots on a Dirt Bike,” sees Missy try to run away with her boyfriend Todd, only to fall at the first hurdle when she discovers Todd has brought only $10.

Despite some supporting roles in a few other episodes, Missy was reduced to an afterthought compared to Meemaw or Mary in season 1 of the spinoff. To make matters worse, Missy’s story was already let down by The Big Bang Theory, since the original series gave Missy a terrible ending. While The Big Bang Theory gang’s children were never seen onscreen, Missy’s offspring ended up defining her adult self’s entire story. Her husband’s motorcycle accident during her first labor was a particularly grim trauma the original show played for dark laughs.

As if that weren’t enough, Missy and her husband separated while she was pregnant with another child of theirs. This was revealed in a throwaway line from the final season that proved The Big Bang Theory’s original run never took Missy’s story seriously. This means that the character will always be doomed to an unfortunate pre-ordained fate, but it doesn’t mean that she couldn’t have meaningful moments in Young Sheldon and its spinoff. For example, Missy’s teenage rebellion in Young Sheldon season 6 sets up one of the show’s most heartfelt scenes.

After a tornado nearly killed them, Missy tearfully promised her father, George Sr., that she would change her ways after months of acting out. Season 7 made this tragic in retrospect when George Sr died only a year later, suffering a sudden heart attack while at work. While Meemaw’s Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 role is also tricky thanks to her part in season 1 limiting her storylines, Missy’s plot must be a priority in season 2 of the spinoff.

Missy’s story deserves to be told on its own merits, but it is also central to Georgie’s growth as a character. Georgie’s relationship with his sister is vital, as effectively raising her is part of why he resents Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory. The problem is, outside intervening in “Two Idiots on a Dirt Bike” and episode 2, “Some New York Nonsense,” Georgie hasn’t really been that present to Missy in season 1. If he did, as he claims, look after Missy and Mary while Sheldon was away at college, season 2 needs to highlight this.

Missy’s Plot Could Follow More Than Her Love Life

While Georgie might have complained about the unfair division of labor among the family members, this is not the only reason that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 needs to foreground Missy. Sheldon did not return home in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 1, and now that the spinoff’s new characters are well-established, he may not be back for some time. Sheldon’s Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 comeback would be harder to pull off since the show now must find time for new characters like Ruben, Connor, and Chloe.

As such, Missy’s role in the spinoff is even more vital as she is Georgie’s main link to the show’s former title character. Defiant, self-confident, and often overly ambitious, Missy has a lot in common with her genius twin. However, she also has a rebellious streak that is entirely absent in Sheldon, and this means her role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 could be very different from her earlier role in The Big Bang Theory if handled right.
